I saw this meme and felt compelled to do it just because the two books on my desk so neatly cancel each other out. And they are stacked right next to my elbow so I could just use the legit one on top, but it would create a very false image of me and my reading habits, ie, that they are all v. serious.

2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest (unless it's too troublesome to reach and is really heavy. Then go back to step 1).
BOOK ONE - 'Queer Gothic' by George Haggerty, who is going to be one of my professors at UCR and gave me this book at the open house.
"Moschus is best known, of course, for his position in the classical elegy tradition, and Percy Shelley also translated a "Fragment of the Elegy on the Death of Bion": 'Ye Dorian woods and waves lament aloud, / Augment your tide, O streams, with fruitless tears, / For the beloved Bion is no more. / Let every tender herb and plant and flower, / From each dejected bud and drooping bloom, / Shed dews of liquid sorrow, and with breath / Of melancholy sweetness on the wind / Diffuse its languid love.' The author does not quote from this lament, but I think it is implied in the citation of Moschus at the moment of embarkation. The mood is one of loss. The love these men share is already constituted in elegiac terms."
...And this passage, strangely enough, is actually about the book I wrote my writing sample on!
BOOK TWO - 'The Fiery Cross' by Diana Gabaldon. XD
"'What? Where?' Bree half-turned on one heel, glaring round. Her hand curled up into a fist, and I thought it rather fortunate that the sheriff wasn't in sight. Having Brianna arrested for assault really would have a dampening effect on the wedding."
Whew, I had my fingers crossed it wasn't a really awkward sex scene or description of bodily functions, both things of which this author is much too fond.
