Edge, Sunday Night raspberryturk July 6 2009, 03:34:20 UTC
Reno was in worse deep trouble than Elena probably imagined he was in. When his phone rang, it was the dead of night, and he was off in the wastelands, stalking back toward Edge.

"Stupid friggin'... Yo!"

If he sounded like he was in a startlingly good mood, that was really Reno codespeak for 'I haven't slept in two days and I've been killing one-hits in the wastelands for about as long and I will kill you all.'

"Reno?" Elena frowned, shifting position slightly. "Sorry, am I interrupting? I can call back."

He didn't ... exactly sound like himself. Shit. What kind of situation had she left him in?

"Rookie!" Reno was grinning that half-sane grin that he wore while he was stuck in that 'coming down off a job high' phase. Not that Elena could see it. "You ain't interruptin' nothin'! I'm just headin' home for the night, yo!"

There was important sleeping to do! For a little while!

"How's Fandom treatin' you so far?"

"Late night?" she asked. "Are you on sewer-cleaning duty, without a brush?"

Tseng had been pissed. Tseng liked to take his anger out on his employees. Especially Reno, and especially if he could convince himself that the situation was Reno's fault.

"... how bad is it?"

That was more important than whether or not she was enjoying Fandom. Because she could lie, and come home.

"Just a few one-hits out in the wastes, yo," Reno said, more or less honestly. "Ain't nothin' I can't handle."

This was accentuated by a slight grunt as Reno punted a stray Kalm Fang somewhere into next month. Stupid hounds could stay in Kalm, for all he cared.

"So, you still figure I was makin' shit up?"

Look, he kinda had to know these things. Because if the Rookie had been properly traumatized by Fandom, then he could totally get over the fact that he'd been conscious for about two days, now.

"You were really a little red chocobo?" she asked. "I mean, I kinda thought that was just you messing with Tseng again."

Not stuttering on his name. Nope, nope, nope.

"Have you ever seen fireworks?"

"I was cute, wasn't I?" Reno grinned. "Was a black chocobo once, too. That was a class assignment."

A pause, then, while Reno went all Chuck Norris on the ass of another Kalm Fang. He'd thought he was Chuck Norris for an afternoon. He totally had the touch. To a lesser degree.

Nobody was as hardcore as Chuck Norris.

"Seen fireworks? I was in a class that let me make 'em before, yo. Hell, when Rude an' I took out that overpass, we used some of the fireworks I made in class in that, too." A beat. "Flashy as all hell, wasn't it?"

"They were out over the water," Elena said softly. "I was up on the roof, smoking a cigarette. Some other girl sitting there, watching with me. We smoked, and there was this enormous sky overhead, with more stars than I'd ever seen, and these big fireworks filling it up."

She'd seen fireworks once or twice. In Midgar, over the plate. Smoggy air didn't really make for spectacular fireworks.

"And you were adorable. Why don't I have pictures of when you were a little kid?"

"'Cause the pictures of me as a little kid mostly involved me stickin' the camera up my nose," Reno reported dutifully, looking around to see if he could spot any more of those annoying monsters. The coast seemed to be clear for the time being.

Awesome time to take a seat in the sand. Ah. That was nice.

"You're enjoyin' your sky, then."

He'd kind of figured she might.

Okay, here, she should tell him something blase about how it was okay, or whatever, so that he didn't think it was any big deal, and so he wouldn't feel pressured to let her stay longer if he was getting shit from the boss. And he had to be getting shit from the boss.

Except ... dammit.

"I ..." She cleared her throat. "I've been ... meeting people? And shopping, and staring up at the sky, and ... this place is ..."

She didn't have words. She might never.

"It's all sky," she said. "The people, and just walking around breathing the air. Everything here is sky."

"I spent like the entire time at my window or on the roof, yoto."

When he hadn't been drinking or having sex or whatever, at least.

"You gotta look damn hard to find a sky like that on Gaia. An' if you're lucky, maybe the school'll go on another trip, maybe spring break or somethin'. I got to go to Mexico. Think Costa del Sol, but more kickass."

Pause.

"That's where the blue chocobo came from, by the way."

She probably knew which one. She'd been to grad.

"Why a blue chocobo?" Some things had to be asked.

"Reno? Did you feel ... like you were breathing differently, here?"

Nothing was seizing her lungs. She was going to hang up the phone and read, in her bunk. Then sleep. No one was after her, and the air wasn't heavy with death and the graveyard of Midgar looming out of reach. She felt more refreshed than she had in years.

"Got Rikku a blue chocobo doll from the Gold Saucer, like, the day we left on that trip, yo." Another pause, while Reno stretched out and flopped backward in the sand. Coooozy. "Plus, I was drunk."

Which kind of went without saying.

"Breathin' differently how? Clean air that don't stink like rust an' stigma, ain't holdin' your breath waitin' for the bullet to the face that ain't comin'? Shit like that?"

That made the whole thing sound almost romantic. Which was not something she was used to associating with Reno, no.

"All of it," she said. "No one knows, no one cares, the air's crisp and clean, and every day I start with whatever I decide, and go from there."

"An' you only been there since Friday," Reno chuckled, shutting his eyes. He'd just sleep out here tonight. Why the hell not? "Just wait until you actually settle in, yo."

A pause. It was kind of an awkward pause while Reno puzzled out how to say what he wanted to say, next.

"... When I say 'home,' I ain't talkin' about Edge. Or even Midgar. An' I fuckin' loved Midgar."

"Me, too," Elena said. "I loved it, and I hated it, too. It was all mishmashed together."

Midgar had been a complicated place. ShinRa created the slums. Most people in the slums hated ShinRa. And most of them would take a job at ShinRa in a heartbeat if it meant getting out of those slums.

"... Reno? How ... how did he take it? I have to know."
