Room 401, Tuesday Morning

Jul 15, 2008 09:22

Just after Agnes finished getting dressed and pinning her tall pointy hat in place, she was attacked by not one but TWO parrots, a large showy black palm cockatoo, and a small green budgie, which flew around her head and pecked at the hat for a bit before settling one on each shoulder ( Read more... )

Eve herself had a Rainbow Lorikeet on one shoulder.

"You're lucky you're so cute," she grumbled at the bird.

"So cute!"

Eve rolled her eyes and kept walking down the hall, just in time to hear " ... down your sodding back!"

Well, that just made her stop at the door and knock carefully.

Agnes groaned and shook her head.

"Now's exactly the time you want to talk to people!" squawked the cockatoo.

"Shut up!" Agnes hissed. Then, louder, she asked, "Hello?"

"Shut up! Hello! Shut up! Hello!" the budgie shrieked.

Eve mentally facepalmed before poking her head into the room. "So I'm not the only one with a sudden new friend."

"New friend!" the lorikeet said cheerfully.

"Shut up unless you want to be on the receiving end of a silencing spell," Eve said to the lorikeet.

"Spell." But then the lorikeet went quiet, looking rather strangely subdued for a bird.

"No," Agnes confirmed. "They just showed up."

"Showed up!" the budgie agreed. "Showed up!"

...Did she say 'spell'?

"Are you a witch?" Agnes asked.

"A witch! A witch!"

The cockatoo chimed in with "Sure, are you going to run away from this one, too?"

"No comments from the peanut gallery," Eve said, glaring at the cockatoo. "And yes, I'm a witch."

The lorikeet didn't repeat that, mostly because it was more interested in gnawing at Eve's hair for the moment.

"Me, too," Agnes told her with a shy smile as she pointed at her hat. "Just learning. I'm Agnes."

"Me too! I'm Agnes! Me too! I'm Agnes!" the budgie chirped.

"Maybe she can get this damn thing to shut up, since you fail so badly!" the cockatoo squawked happily.

"You be nice," Eve said to the cockatoo, her own parrot echoing the words. "Of course she can't shut it up if she's just starting to learn. Not everybody learns that kind of stuff right away!"

She smiled at Agnes. "I'm Eve, by the way. I'm down the hall in 410."

"I think this," Agnes said, frowning at the cockatoo, "is because I'm still learning. Untapped magical ability finding an outlet or whatever."

The budgie chimed in with "Ability finding an outlet or whatever!"

"Pleased to meet you," Agnes continued. "Sorry about the... circumstances."

She glared at the cockatoo while the budgie chirped "Circumstances! Circumstances!"

"Staring at it's probably not going to help!" the cockatoo squawked.

"Pleased to meet you, too," Eve said.

"You, too," said the lorikeet.

Ignoring the lorikeet, Eve said, "Though I've never actually met a witch who wore a pointy hat before."

Well, she hadn't!

"Oh, it's, uh, sort of like a uniform, where I'm from," Agnes told her. ("Like a uniform! A uniform!") "I mean, if you don't wear it, people won't know you're a witch." ("You're a witch! A witch!")

"That doesn't stop it from looking stupid," the cockatoo said.
