"We should move," she said. "Just... leave, you know? Before anything else happens."
Greece was welcoming; they found work, a home, and a new life. They married. They were planning on starting a family. Michael, they'd call him. Or, if a girl, Juliet.
He didn't realize that leaving that city wasn't a guarantee that they'd survive.
The newspapers said there weren't any survivors, which is true; the crash killed everyone, eventually. Some deaths took more time. Some deaths took weeks because people, like Dan, couldn't stomach the thought of pulling the plug.
"She's not in any pain," the doctors said. "But there's nothing we can do."

At her funeral, he held his wedding band to his chest and swore that he'd never fall in love again.
After a year, the universe swallowed him whole again.
He found himself misplaced by centuries.
It was then that he decided he had to get as far away as possible.
The stars called; he answered.
The year will be 2356 AD when the Rift energy reaches for him again. He will be 35 years old and sound asleep in the crew quarters of the Signal, a massive ship approaching the NGC 9074-XI galaxy after two years of travel.
There will be an explosion. Reality will shift. People will die.
And he'll wake up back in Chicago, back in 2010, and will start all over again.
