I has costumes

I took some more pictures of my DCon costume progress this afternoon, and most of them came out looking like ass. But I'll post em anyways because I don't have anything better to post.

First of all, the crown I made out of crap jewelry I either found or bought at one of those teen girl mall accessory stores!

I'm not sure if I like this or not. But it took about an hour to make and cost a whopping $15 for materials, so it doesn't really matter. I'll probably wear it even though it doesn't go with any of my costumes. Derp.

Next up, the cheap-o brown crushed burnout velvet gown! Cost: about $5. Time spent: not much. Result: looks really, really bad on a hanger. I'll wear this one too, probably to the Viking party because it looks kinda vikingy.

It will not fit on my dressform because of its lack of any kind of zippers or lacing (I wiggle it on over my head in a way that totally does not look stupid at all), so I had to photograph it on a hanger looking like a big shapeless sack. Seriously, it looks pretty good once it's on with a belt. I'm kind of embarrassed to post the shapeless sack-like pics, but whatever.

At least the fabric it's made of is really cool:

The sleeves aren't closed down the arm, just tacked in a few places and decorated with beads.

This reminds me that I forgot to take pictures of my belt. Dang. I made it myself out of leather, using a screwdriver and everything.

The next two pieces are part of the same costume. I usually like to name everything after a character for easy reference, but I don't have a name for this one yet. I'm open to suggestions (and for the gown, too). I finished the tunic a few weeks ago and am now working on the last part of the jerkin. Both have taken for-freaking-ever because of the massive amounts of hand work to be done.

Tunic is dark brown fake stretch suede lined with grey-green. Collar is completely embroidered by hand with gold and copper metallic thread, with a couple silver beads thrown in for fun. Jerkin is a light rust-colored stretch suede with reverse appliqué at the neckline, hem and sleeves showing blue silk. Sleeves aren't pictured since they're not attached yet. Neckline is edged with thick piping made from the lining fabric, a burnt orange jacquard.

This also looks like a shapeless sack on a hanger, because it won't fit on my dressform either.

Decorative lacing down the sleeves:

The fabric wasn't heavy enough to hang well on its own, so I sewed decorative rocks to the hem. Problem solved!

Embroidery on the collar:

Shapeless-sack-on-a-hanger number three:

(this one would fit on my dressform, but I was too lazy to haul the dressform upstairs and take the hoopskirt off)

One side of the reverse appliqué at the bottom is done:

To do the reverse appliqué, I started by drawing my design on the wrong side of the fabric. Realistically, I probably should have chosen smaller and easier designs for my first attempt...

Half finished, half pinned in place:

What the top part looks like finished:

I wanted to be finished this by this past Friday, but my new and more realistic goal is Wednesday. Once I have the reverse appliqué done, all I have to do to finish it is sew up the side seams and attach the sleeves, which will take no time at all.

So that's my big costume update. And I still haven't finished half of what I want to get done for DCon. :( I think I'll probably be recycling stuff from previous years.

omfg this needs to be done now, costume photos, stop making costumes you don't need!, why are all my photos so lame
