I've actually heard of this before, it was on an episode of This American Life, which is a radio show on NPR that basically just has Americans telling their stories. There was a woman telling about an orphan from another country (I think it was Romania) who had spent most of his childhood in a crib without really being cared for by an adult parent figure. The kids in the Romanian orphanage hadn't been abused, they were fed enough and allowed to talk to each other and stuff, but it wasn't like having a parent that played with you and nurtured you.

Anyway, this kid when he was adopted by this woman who was telling the story had trouble loving other people, since no one had ever really loved him. Someone told her attachment therapy might be a good idea, since he was very violent and didn't care about anyone. Basically what the woman and her hisband did for their son was things that you would normally do for a newborn child, like sit for half an hour every evening and read to one another, and they had to make eye contact when they spoke to their son, and stuff like that. It ended up helping him a lot in the end.

But this version of this therapy in the article sounds completely different, because the parents interviewed for the radio show didn't restrain him from water or food or air like it says in that article, that's really just awful. From the case I heard on the radio show, the things they did just sounded like minor nuissences for a child, he was never physically harmed. And it wasn't a 'quicky fix' either, it took many years for him to fully benefit from it.

I realize this comment ran on ages, far longer than I expected it to, but I just wanted to say what I had heard about it. I'll definately repost the link on my journal.

I know, I think it's completely despicable; thanks so much for re-posting it, it's vital that people realise how inhumane and sick it is. It's hard to put into words how disgusting this 'therapy' truly is.
