Looking at Guy as the blonde-haired man spoke, Squall gave a nod in response. Squall paused as he thought about those that he had considered trustworthy comrades, at one point. Either they were gone now, or they had simply vanished. Squall hated to admit it, but he was worried about one particular person, at the moment. Since there was nothing he could do, however, ... he had found it best not to even think about him. It made it easier (or so he thought) to deal with it. Besides, this world would not stop simply because of the disappearance of one. It continued moving. Squall figured that it would be best, if he continued, as well. If he gave up over a few people, what good would come of it?
This is why the mercenary found it pointless to have friends. It only ended in them leaving, or vice-versa. Though, in thinking like that... it was as though he was calling them...
Frowning considerably hard, Squall rested his right elbow on the table, before burying his face in the palm of his hand. He heard the other's words about residents being rewritten. All he could do was sit there silently, for the moment, though. Guy's words were true, and it caused Squall to sigh softly as a way of acknowledging that fact. Suddenly the brunette dropped his hand.
"There's no point in dwelling on that. We won't accomplish anything, by it."
He knew his words could be considered "cold", by some people. In all honesty, though. Squall hated not being able to stop Zeit. If simply talking about Zeit could stop the things from happening, he very likely would. However, right now, the only thing they could do... was try to make it easier to keep track of everyone. That was not the only point of the list, though...
Knowing everyone's name would make it much more convenient, as well.
Guy watched him carefully, not really having had to deal with someone like Squall. Jade was one thing, but at least he was more open about things, though vague to a painful degree at times. It didn’t help that he really had no idea how to console strangers other than being the eternal optimist. And it didn’t seem like the most appropriate of times to be overly happy about a situation like this.
So he frowned as well, stirring his drink with his straw. When Squall spoke again, he listened intently.
“I know… but it still seems wrong… the way he just plays with us, does what he wants… uses us to kill others… and the way he can just… make us forget the most important things, the most important people… that’s just sick.”
The brunette's expression momentarily softened just a bit, before his eyes closed. Sighing softly, Squall opened his eyes and looked at Guy with a serious expression on his face. In all honesty, Squall did not know how much more he could take of this place. He was a little... tired, to say the least. Perhaps the town... and everything happening in it, was finally starting to get to the mercenary. Hell, even SeeDs have limits, right? Squall was only human, after all.
"I understand where you're coming from."
He lowered his head a little, averting his eyes to the floor as he did so. Squall brought his hand to his forehead and began massaging the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger. He could feel a headache approaching. However, he did not want to even risk worrying Guy, so he dropped his hand and did his best to appear just fine. He spoke in a low tone, as he looked back up at Guy.
"Yes, it's wrong. I agree with that, completely. He has no right to do any of this."
Letting another sigh escape, Squall looked to the side. This feeling of helplessness - of not being able to do anything to stop Zeit no matter how much he wanted to - it was more than enough to drag him down. That is the reason why Squall had been doing his best to not get completely close to anybody. Hell, he had risked becoming close to a couple of the people...
Guy just watched him, feeling a slight pang. He didn’t get it. Really. It confused the hell out of him as he watched the younger boy sit there, sighing, replying in a weary tone. It was in his nature to want to help, to cheer people up, to comfort everyone the best way he could. In this case though, he felt like that if he tried, the other would shy away from him. And that thought hurt him slightly as he just kept watching.
Right now, he wanted to reach over and grab Squalls hand, give it a squeeze. Instead, he folded up his arms and leaned against them on the table, keeping his eyes on the salt and pepper shakers in front of him. He was glad the boy didn’t know him too well, or else he would have known that this was definitely not how the cheerful blonde usually went about his day.
“The only thing we really can do is warn the people that arrive in this world… and hope he doesn’t kill them too.”
Hearing words like that honestly annoyed Squall. It was one thing to think it, but to actually hear it? Of course, the anger was not towards Guy. It was towards the reason those words were being spoken. A frown appeared on the brunette's face, before quickly vanishing as he looked back up at the source of the words. After a few seconds of studying Guy, Squall let out a sigh and buried his entire face in the palm of his hand. It felt like this entire conversation was doing nothing but creating more negative emotions for the both of them.
"Yeah, but... "
Actually, Squall had no idea what he wanted to say. He just wanted to say something that would stop... well, he was not even entirely sure. The stress, maybe? It was bad enough having to miss your home, which Squall was sure Guy was doing. Guy was probably the third person that Squall felt he could have a decent conversation with (at least... a conversation that did not involve the mercenary getting incredibly annoyed at the other person, at least once). As much as Squall had not wanted to, he had already formed a sort of respect to this man. He was smart, he was not annoyed, and he had started to become someone that Squall felt was trustworthy.
But, wait...
The start of a friendship was trust. Lowering his hand, Squall studied the table in front of him. For a moment, he looked almost worried. Had he not promised himself that he would not start to get close to anyone else... after two certain people left here?
“A warning is something I never got, you know, before he got to me…” Guy replied quietly. He still didn’t look up, just kept staring at the two condiment dispensers. “He targeted those that were my friends first… that just hurt… then I decided to do something about it, and became the next victim. And then is quieted down, no one was challenging him… then I left, and when I came back, he’d already killed a few more… Seems the less we fight, the less he kills.”
Looking up again, he made sure not to meet the Mercenary’s eyes, staring off in a random direction. “The people that had known me before, many of them were still here. And now so many of them have disappeared.” He sighed and went back to looking down.
“I am going to try and fight him in a way that won’t get anyone endangered.”
The brunette studied Guy a moment, before looking to the side. Guy really had been through a lot. Of course, everyone here had it pretty rough. That is, unless they enjoyed being here. To each their own, he supposed. Some people could have nothing for them back in their world. The mercenary's expression softened a moment, before he sighed and spoke in a low tone.
"I see..." Squall then looked at guy as he spoke, "How do you plan on doing that?"
Guy stared at the table for a few more minutes before looking up at Squall. “Well, first of all, I’m going to try and enjoy my time here... No sense in brooding all the time. It can make you sick if you do too much of that.” he replied, a small smile on his face. He then smiled a little brighter and watched the waitress bring their food to the table. He thanked her quietly and grabbed his fork, set on eating. “And I’ll do what I can to help the others feel welcome here, and help them in trying to leave, if I can. It’d be a waste to have everyone be depressed all the time as well.”
He continued to study Guy for a few minutes, even after the words had been spoken. Something about Guy was familiar. Squall wished he could place his finger on it. Something about Guy reminded Squall of home. Fortunately, it was not in a bad way. The brunette then realized he had been staring just a little, and quickly averted his eyes to the food that had been placed in front of him. Picking up his fork, he began eating silently.
Guy actually started to blush a bit when he noticed Squall staring at him quite intently. He looked down when the other did and concentrated on his food for a while.
After he finished his food, he finally looked back up, the blush quite gone now. “So how do you like it? It’s good, right?”
He had pretended not to notice the blush, but it probably did not help his case that there was just the hint of color on his cheeks by the time he looked down. When the other spoke, Squall looked up. His face was back to its normal color, by this time (which Squall was incredibly grateful for).
"Yeah..." He said, nodding as he hastily wiped his mouth off with a napkin.
He was also finished by this time. Picking up his glass, he took a sip of his drink, averting his eyes to the floor on his left as he did so.
Guy decided to keep his attention diverted to the outside now, not all too sure how to continue this conversation now. For all intensive purposes, he was embarrassed, to say the least. He watched the people walk past the window, watched the leaves fall from the trees, then saw his own reflection in the glass. And what he saw did not make him happy. He almost looked how he felt, weary, sore, and his usual smile was missing as well.
This made him frown at his own reflection and sigh quietly. “Maybe… we should put this off… till another day or something.”
A frown appeared on Squall's face as he looked back over at Guy, for a moment. Narrowing his eyes as he studied the other silently, Squall started to open his mouth to say something. Instead, he looked away and all that came out was a sigh. Maybe Guy was right. At the moment, neither of them was in any condition to help anybody else. They both looked like they were the ones in need of help.
"Yeah..."
Suddenly the brunette's hand clamped over his mouth and he began coughing. It did not last long, fortunately. The hint of a groan escaped him as he moved the hand over his mouth, to his forehead. Damn it, the headache was getting worse. With yet another sigh, Squall rested his hand on his lap and looked off to the side. Maybe he should just go home...
Guy looked at Squall, rather concerned. Seemed the other was getting sick, by the doubted Squall would own up to that. He sighed himself and nodded slowly.
“I don’t think we’ll get anything else done today. How bout we call it a day and go home?” he suggested, trying to sound as unconcerned as possible. If Squall was getting to be sick, Guy didn’t want to offend him by forcing his help on him.
“I’ve got some things I need to get before we can compile a proper list anyways, alright?”
The brunette nodded and sighed, before standing. He would go rest. Hopefully whatever this was, would not become severe. Briefly scratching the back of his head, he glanced at Guy a moment, before looking away again.
"Alright. Let me know when you're ready."
With that, he gave a quick wave and headed for the door. He wanted to get home as soon as possible. His headache was becoming worse and worse. Just before he reached the door, he started coughing, again. Again, it quickly passed. Sighing in slight frustration, he pushed open the door and left.
This is why the mercenary found it pointless to have friends. It only ended in them leaving, or vice-versa. Though, in thinking like that... it was as though he was calling them...
