Tower opening scene in JnK (The game starts like this if Alice is living in the Tower... After this scene plays you have to have Alice go and visit the other places and see the circus, and then come back, and then you can start visiting people and changing the seasons by playing annoying card games with Joker.)
Nightmare: ....It's cold.
Alice: Yeah, it's cold.
N: ......It's really cold.
A: Yeah, it's really cold.
N: ......It's cold. It's ridiculously cold.
A: .......Right.
N: ......It's cold. It's too cold.
A: ........Since we get colder the more we say keep saying it's cold, why don't we stop?
N: .......However, it's cold. Since it's cold, it's natural to say that it's cold.
A: .......Even if you say it's cold, it won't get warmer.
N: Even if I don't say it, it won't get warmer. Cold is cold.
Nightmare and I are sharing a large blanket.
If you don't stick close to someone, your body will get thoroughly chilled.
That's how cold it is.
N: .........Urgh, [?]
N: Th-thankfully there's a fireplace.
It's normally unused, but installing it was the right choice.
A: .....I didn't think it was usable.
I had thought that the large fireplace was a decoration to show how luxurious this room was.
It was something of no use in this country.
Since there's no heat or cold, there aren't any opportunities to use it.
N: This cold is unbelievable.
If it goes on like this, I'll......
N: .....Cough up blood.
A: ......Don't you always cough up blood?
He doesn't need to be cold for that.
A: You're likely to catch a cold because of this cold, so I think it would be better for you to go to the hospital soon.
I was already used to it (indeed, I had ended up getting used to it), but he's too sickly.
Normally coughing up blood is unthinkable. It's not something to get used to.
Nightmare's hatred of hospitals is really hard-core.
He whines like a child that he hates shots too, and when they try to take him there, he makes a huge fuss.
(Though, it's not that I haven't wondered whether he is healthy, since he can struggle that much.....)
N: Yes, that's right!
I'm healthy, I'm healthy!
Nightmare [check spelling of last name]
He's an incubus [check translation] and can read people's minds.
(If you can enter minds, then you should understand the feelings of the people worrying about you and go to the hospital.......)
N: I don't need anything like a hospital.
I'm fine like this!
A: .......Ah.
I see.
A: Then, it must definitely be my imagination that even now your face is so pale you look like you might collapse.
The color of his face is bad.
Or should I say, white.
Ghostly pale..... to put it in a morbid way...... like a corpse.
N: !
Th-That's because it's cold.............
A: Even if it weren't cold, you'd cough up blood, and you'd be pale.
N: ......Geh.
Why is one of my staff this cold?! [hmm, should I translate 部下 as staff or 'subordinate'?」
Staff. [Meh, doesn't sound good]
Yes, now I'm part of his staff.
I'm working as his aide.
(Mostly more like a babysitter, though.....)
N: Eh......
What do you mean by babysitter?!
N: ..............
N: Why are you so.......
........Argh, cold.
(It's not cold because you've been treated coolly.)
A: ......I think I'm obviously much colder than you.
In terms of clothing.
He's wearing a jacket over a long sleeved, but in comparison to that, I'm clearly more lightly dressed.
I hadn't thought it would get this cold all of a sudden.
A; This is......
(....Winter.)
N: ......Yes, it's winter.
It's unmistakably winter.
(Why.....?)
N: ....Shall I tell you?
A: I told you not to read people's minds without permission.
Should I take you to the hospital?
Not only can Nightmare enter others' dreams, he can even enter people's minds.
Even though I tell him to stop, I've given up on putting a stop to his bad habit, though....
.....Sometimes it was helpful that he could understand me without anything being said.
Especially for an eccentric like me.
Of course, that only applies to when it's convenient.
(He's got many good points, but is that why I worry about him being too unhealthy....?)
(Since there are things I dislike about him too, I sometimes do feel like sending him to the hospital....)
N: Ah......!
(Making trouble, doing childish things like reading minds without permission, neglecting his duties.)
N: But that's not a reason to send me to the hospital!
(Sending you to the hospital isn't a bad thing?
......It's for your sake too.)
Successfully conversing through thoughts was strange.
However, Nightmare could read my thoughts correctly.
N: I won't go to the hospital, I will never go there!
His lips are purple.
His skin is snow white.
His body is shivering because of the cold.
No matter how I look at it, he needs a check-up.
He's exactly the sort who should go to the hospital.
Though, if he talks about being able to read minds, he'll probably be sent to a different department of the hospital.....
A: You should go.
(Since it's so cold, his health might fail even more)
N: M-more importantly, Alice, don't you have something to ask?
Why it's become so cold?......
A: Because it's winter, right?
I can't think of it being anything else.... However, it's hard to believe.
(For it to be winter in this world....)
N: Why has it become winter?......Right?
Aren't you curious?
A: ..........Will you explain it to me?
Nightmare always says suggestive things. [revise this: 'suggestive' gives the wrong impression.]
He liked to explain things, but often self-importantly made useless explanations.
(After, I think I'll ask someone else, though)
(That'll be faster.)
N: What are you saying!
It's an important thing.
I'll talk.
(.....Important?)
N: Yes.
An important thing which I must tell you.
(An important thing he must tell me, he says?)
Nightmare's 'important things' were usually 'surprising things' to me.
Just then, I remembered the 'moving.'
Then, Nightmare, who I had met only in dreams, appeared in the open and became real.
(C-could it be another shift in the earth....)
Enduring the cold, I check the landscape I could see from the window for changes.
I can't see very far from here.
However....... come to think of it, the landscape outside of the window is a bit different from usual.
I could only shiver from the sudden cold, so I didn't confirm what was outside again.
Soon after I had 'moved' to the Tower of Clover, I had been anxious, and when I woke up, the first thing I'd do was confirm what was outside.
I had been scared.
I fear change.
(..........)
The forest outside the window.
It had been green.... but it's withering.
(!?)
The forest should have been green, but it was withering.
And, something white was falling.
(What is it this time?
What's happened???)
I had finally gotten used to the Tower of Clover..... And the world I had moved to as well.
Gradually, this world has become normal to me. [check]
(I don't want any more change)
I don't wish for any more changes.
N: Don't worry, Alice.
This isn't the change in the earth's surface you're frightened of.
A: If it's not a change in the earth's surface, what is it?
Why is snow falling?
The times [check] in this country change irregularly, but the climate is always stable.
But now........ it's like this.
N: Didn't I say it before?
Because it's winter.
A: Because it's winter, you say.....
I've become fairly familiar with this world, and I intended to get fairly used to it.
This is a world where time is mad.
A wonderland where the times of the day [check] move without any regularity.
For me, it's a world filled with wonders.
There are things I find abnormal.
However, in this world, those things are common sense.
Morning, evening, and night come and go as they please, and time advances in confusion.
I had thought that in such a world seasons didn't exist.
It's enough that the times of the day change at random.
That alone is enough to confuse my mind.
The seasons aren't a change that'll confuse me even more. [revise, awkward]
At the very least, the seasons hadn't changed since I had came to this world.
I had thought that for there to suddenly be snow was something that had nothing to do with this place.....
N: Shall we take advantage of this and go play in the snow?
Perhaps sensing my confusion, Nightmare speaks to me casually.
Grey: Please stop suggesting activities that will give you a cold, Nightmare-sama.
And to add to that, you're in bad health.....
G: .....Here you are.
It's hot cocoa.
Nightmare's subordinate, who looks after him like a mother.
Grey Ringmarc.
He's a capable aide, and is about as strong as Ace, the Knight of the Castle of Hearts....it seems.
To me, he's a kind adult.
I can't tie that to his fearsome reputation.
A: Thank you, Grey.
N: You're considerate.
Warm drinks are the best for a frozen body.
N: Really, cocoa is the best in the winter!
Cocoa over cold medicine, cocoa over injections!
G: Cocoa isn't a medicine.....
It can't compare to medicine and shots.
G: If you wish, I'll make you cocoa even if it isn't winter, so please go to the hospital now.
A: .....So, it's winter.
Their conversation.
Considering this cold and the landscape outside I could barely see, it seemed that it was definitely winter, as I had thought.
(.....Winter)
(Why is winter....)
N: Even if you ask why, winter is winter?
Alice.
A: I know it's winter.
What I want to say is why has it suddenly become winter.....
Even if the seasons had changed, it's sudden.
It wasn't that it gradually got colder, so this change is too quick.
(Yes, it's too quick....)
No, the changes are always sudden.
There's never a prelude.
It had been that way when I had been thrown to the Tower of Clover.
G: Ah, that's right.
Is this the first winter has come since you've come here?
N: Don't worry, it's no different from the winter you know.
By the way, although it's winter here, there's also spring, summer, and autumn.
In other words, there's spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
There are seasons.
G: We've got to change our clothes.
And the fireplace needs to be lit more.....
G: It's good that it could be used right away, thanks to your cleaning it so diligently.
A: I didn't think that it was going to be used, though.
Though I had thought it was ornamental, I hadn't neglected to clean it, as if it were the same as the fireplace of a home.
I hadn't even thought it would be used.
G: Nightmare-sama, please take care not to become cold.
Truly, I would like it if you would be able to look after your own health.
G: ........Here you are, Nightmare-sama.
Saying this, Grey presents the documents in the same way he had presented the cocoa.
As soon as he saw them, Nightmare cringed.
N: Grey, you!
When I'm free, you tell me to work.....
N: Look outside!
What do you see?!
(What....)
The scene outside.
The gathering white snow.
G: You want to play in the snow?
Even though work is piling up?
Because Nightmare had coughed up blood some time ago, work wasn't proceeding well.
Documents needed to be remade because of the blood which had flown onto them.
N: The four seasons have come at last!?
You don't know what it is to appreciate the seasons?
A: I'm not relaxed enough for that.
I was too busy being suprised.
G: ......You must be bothered by something you're not used to, even though it's not as big as the change in the earth's surface.
Yes, that had been............. shocking.
A: So you're saying that this time it's not that the shape of the earth has changed?
G: Yes, it's not that, but...
N: Heheh, it's all right.
It's nothing to worry about, like something has disappeared.
A: ?
He's talking like he's hinting at something.
N: Only, you should learn about the April Season.
It's the first time for you, right, Alice?
G: April Season....
Certainly, that's somthing you should learn about.
(April Season)
There's April Fool's... but anyway, I hadn't heard of April Season.
The landscape outside the window is far from April..... it's winter.
Notes: This is kind of a repetitive prologue... I'm doing this for the people who are trying to patch JnK, but I need to clean it up a bit and ask them some questions on how they're translating certain things. The prologue actually has three parts, another Alice talks to Julius and another when she comes back from visiting the other places. After this I think I might do (if someone else hasn't done them?) the prologue if Alice lives with the Hatter family, and after that some of the romantic routes?
