Huh. The recent TV adaptation of Sherlock Holmes really is good. I just caught the first (two-hour pilot?) episode on ShowCase last night, and I have to say: I was rather impressed. Although I haven't seen or read much Sherlock Holmes before--so I have little to compare against--the show does seem to be it's own thing. (Okay, so I did read at least half of the stories when I was a child, but I've almost entirely forgotten them. The upside is that it's more or less all "new" to me)
I can't really evaluate how well it suits the...other reasons why some are watching this show, but I do have a lot of praise for the acting and especially the writing and the direction. Holmes is quite quirky and seems to be the driving force in the show as far as the characters go. Dr. Watson mostly seems to be played as the straight man to Holmes' antics...but there seems to be a lot more to the character than that. The other characters were also well done. I did find that the dialogue went a bit too quickly sometimes, but that might just be me.
Probably the one thing that I am most impressed by is the writing and direction. The show has been adapted to a modern-day setting, which works out surprisingly well. They do things with text-messaging and what-have-you that is probably better seen than explained. One of of the writers is Stephen Moffat...wasn't he one of the better of the writers for the recent Dr. Who series? I can't quite remember.
Anyway, if you haven't seen the show yet, I highly recommend it.
