Food choices

So, I decided to go gluten free/dairy free as an experiment, partially because I'm still doing the DDPYOGA and Dallas recommends it. Not one to follow blindly, I've been reading as much as I can about the benefits of a gluten free diet. Lately, my body just hurts, particularly a shoulder and hip I injured a while back. I want to see if eliminating ( Read more... )

I don't know if you know rm at all, but she's NYC based, and I asked her about where to go for premade GF goodies. She had some great info:

Tu-Lu’s is the best gluten-free bakery in the city. They do make some items with clean oats, so a person who also has that sensitivity needs to ask. Their stuff is remarkable and many non-gf people I know like their stuff.

For healthy healthy there is Babycakes. I don’t like their cupcakes, but their cookies and other treats are good. Good for people who need vegan, kosher, or agave-sweetened stuff.

Risotteria has good baked goods and some good gluten-free pasta and mixes. But mostly go for their divine risotto and the best gluten-free pizza in the city. If there, she’ll be near a candy shop called Varsano’s. The owner is a super nice guy, understands about gluten and will be happy to talk you through which of his stuff is safe for you. Also, best chocolate covered marzipan I’ve had in my life.

Lilli and Loo’s is pan-Asian and has a gluten-free menu. Don’t expect anything to be spicy though, even the stuff labelled spicy.

Other than the breads, your friend can eat pretty much all Indian food. She can also eat all Ethiopian food, bread included, since it’s made from teff. Frozen meal ingredients need to be checked for both, but in restaurants she’ll be fine.

At Trader Joe’s she should go to the manager’s station and ask for their Gluten-free list. Also most TJ’s now carry Udi’s, which is the best sandwich bread I’ve found.

I had a sandwich on regular bread and a sandwich on Udi's last summer, and would never have known the difference if I hadn't watched my friend taking them out of the respective bags.

Know of her? I've sang next to her at Rose's Turn. I am acquainted with her through Velma. Those are good recommendations.

I know all about Varsano's. Not only was it a favorite at Rose's Turn but I actually worked with Mark Varsano's mom, who was the nurse at the school where I work. She used to bring in samples around Valentine's day to get Mark some sales. YUM.

Thanks for asking her and thanks for your input.

I thought there was a chance, but didn't remember seeing her around here before, so I hedged my bets. ;-)

No, she's not on my friends list. We are only acquaintances and I've met her once or twice at Rose's. But I definitely know who she is from my friends Fred and Velma.
