Taking advantage of a rare opportunity

Yesterday, Bree went camping in Pennsylvania with her school. At the last minute, a slot opened and off she went. This is the first time she's going to a camp that isn't Comfort Zone. I'm worried and excited all at once. Bree being away suddenly left Howard and I with a very open weekend. He turned to me and asked, "Mohegan Sun?", which is a casino and one of my favorite getaway spots. I told him no, there were too many chores to do, too much paperwork to catch up on and I just couldn't spare the time. I told Bree what Howie had suggested and she looked over her glasses at me (Which is a very Helen thing to do and usually precedes someone getting a lecture from me) and said, "You need to go. The chores will wait, the paperwork will still be there but Mommy, you need a break." And that's what did it. So, yesterday, since the chores really can't wait and I had off from work, I cleaned, ran errands and did the laundry. I went through my greenhouse and instead of just watering the plants like I had planned to, re-potted and trimmed back and removed dead leaves from everything. I'm up early now so I can get the rest of my chores done. Then, we will go see Mom at rehab and head to Connecticut. We are going to stop at my favorite restaurant, Margarita's, for lunch since we are passing near Mystic Seaport. Then we are staying at Captain Grant's Bed and Breakfast, built in 1754. Definitely my kind of place and it has quite a history, serving as a garrison in the Revolutionary War and hiding place for runway slaves in the Civil War. There may even be a couple of ghosts. Then we will go to Mohegan Sun and just be. Tomorrow, we'll pick Bree up from school and then go see Mom again so she won't miss any visits from us.

Harry is being generous enough to watch the house and take care of our pets for two days. Thank you Harry.

Whee! A real weekend type weekend.

I almost changed my mind again last night when a good friend from Massachusetts (Not DR, Harry, his brother) called to ask me for sight seeing suggestions since he and his 12 year old would be in the Big Apple today. ARGH! I really wanted to see him but hopefully there will be other times. Good to hear his voice though. Not changing plans.

Here's hoping Howard and I have a great time and Bree has fun at camp with no meltdowns. As my assistant at work says: Inshallah.

friends, bree, fun
