The best idea to find a film school that interests you is to go directly to the university's website and, more specifically, the website for their film department. Look at the courses offered, the equipment they own, what professors teach there, what textbooks they use, if they've won any awards or participated in film festivals, etc etc.

I'm not sure about top filmmaking schools in the U.S., since I'm in Canada. Something I find really helpful when getting a feel for a school from a student's perspective is to find forums, websites, communities, Facebook groups, etc etc devoted to students in the program. If people are going to whine and bitch about what they hate and rave about what they love, it'll be in a place like that.

I'm not in a filmmaking program myself, but my major is centred more on film studies - ie theory and criticism and so on. I do enjoy filmmaking, but it's never been anything more than an occasional, casual hobby, and I can't imagine actually being graded on it, never mind doing it for a living :P Studying film, though, I totally love, and would love to write about it for ever and ever
