On a temperate stormy night

This is from the " Best of 2009" "challenge" that I am "doing." The original post is here!

December 4 Book. What book - fiction or non - touched you? Where were you when you read it? Have you bought and given away multiple copies?

The book that had a Doppler effect on my heart in 2009 was Rivka Galchen's Atmospheric Disturbances. I already blogged about it at nogoodforme.com, but weeks and weeks after that entry, it still works on me. I don't think I'm really able to look at it objectively, because it's set in my neighborhood and it's changed the relationship I have with my surroundings. There's something really magical about a book that can take a setting so deeply familiar to me (Morningside Heights) and imbue it with a feeling of the uncanny.

I still think about the emotional tragedy that's enfolded within the plot of the book. It makes me realize that what I want most out of love is that trickiest of paradoxes: to know someone and be fully known by them, and yet for that knowing to reveal just what a source of wonder and mystery you both are.

It's not a perfect book by any means, but it lingered with me.
