Interesting - there seems to be no middle ground with this movie. People either love it or hate it. Personally, I think it's brilliant. The cast is marvelous (and I think they did a good job with the singing especially as Sondheim songs are very difficult to sing). And its visual aspects are stunning, so thanks for the lovely screencaps! ^_^
I'm on the middle ground. :D I didn't think it was a crime against humanity, nor did I think it was absolutly brilliant. The material *is* difficult, and while I didn't like Helena's voice that much and the supporting cast (like Rickman) plain just couldn't sing, Depp handled the songs well I think.
I agree about Rickman: he's a very good actor but he obviously can't sing. But I forgive him because I think he's convincing in his role. ^_^ I was surprised by Depp's singing, too. I liked it. The songs Bonham-Carter had to sing have to be some of the most difficult songs in a musical that I've ever heard. She's not bad, but her acting is far better. I guess with a plot like that it's always difficult - it IS ugly and strange. Some of the effects are simply disgusting. I like that they took the risk.
