The Emmy's Reloaded...

Sep 18, 2005 22:02

Okay -- this is the final version of my Emmy thoughts:

The Good:

JAMES SPADER WON AGAIN!! Sorry, I had to bold that. Given my post a few days ago, I think it is only fitting that I rejoice in Alan Shore's consecutive victory. I still think Boston Legal is going to suck without Tara, but James Spader and William Shatner kick serious ass.

Marcia Cross -- how HOT does she look!

Also hot: Haller Berry, Charlize Theron, Rachel Bilson, Lauren Graham, Debra Messing, Sandra Oh, Ellen Pompeo's arms (she's the new Sarah Jessica Parker in the toned arms department)

Hot men included:
Chris O'Donnell, Patrick Dempsey, Matthew Fox, John Stewart, Jason Bateman and Zach Braff.

The Johnny Carson tribute by David Letterman
Arrested Development beating Housewives in the Best Writing in a Comedy Series

Shatner winning his second Emmy for Denny Crane and his performance of the Star Trek theme.

Felicity Huffman!!! I wanted Marcia Cross to win, but Felicity is just as good. Anybody but Terri. Her speech was fucking amazing...all the Sports Night shout-outs made my day!

Spader.

The kid from Everybody Hates Chris and the Hurricane Katrina victim -- very cute.

Lost winning Best Drama. For all of us Felicity fans out there -- this is some serious vindication. Go Abrams! I motherfucking love me some Deadwood, but this year was all about Lost.

The Bad:

THE TELECAST ISN'T IN HDTV!!! What the fuck CBS?!?! You officially suck ass. Last year, I couldn't watch the Emmy's in HD, because Comcast and Cox Communications were still arguing, and the ABC station hadn't been added to the HD lineup (even though they were broadcasting in HD). Now I have ABC in HDTV (and NBC, FOX, CBS, TNT, TBS and a few other stations), but CBS has the Emmy's and is doing them in Standard. Idiots. Way to get people to upgrade...assholes.

Everybody Loves Raymond Cast -- You finally left our TV sets and yet you won TWO awards (that should have been won by Arrested Development stars) and wasted a bunch of time presenting. GO AWAY. I hate you all.

Emmy Idol. Just NOT funny or witty. And you all know how much I both Trump and Megan Mulally from Will & Grace, but come on -- if they WERE going to pick a winner -- give it to Captain Kirk -- come on!

Hugh Jackman winning for his performance in the TONY Awards. No one watches the Tony's. People who are nominated for Tony's don't even watch the show on TV. If CBS hadn't aired it this year -- I wonder if it would have won, or if the far more deserving Daily Show would have prevailed.

The shameless Two and a Half Men plugs.

Patricia Arquette winning over Mariska. Mariska rules. Patricia gave a good speech though! Yay for that.

Everybody Loves Raymond winning Best Comedy Show. Fuck that. Fuck Raymond. Fuck Ray Ramano. Fuck the Academy. Seriously, WTF!

The Ugly:

Terri Hatcher -- how SHITTY does she look! Seriously -- who was her stylist and how can we make sure this never happens again?

Also not: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Patricia Arquette, Doris Roberts taking her grandkids on-stage (can you tell I hate Everybody Loves Raymond)

Marg Helgenberger's lips. Good dress -- good hair...but way too much collagen. She should have followed the lead of another former ER-guest star, Mariska Hagrity, and learned how to successfully enhance her lips.

I feel the need to once again mention the win of Everybody Loves Raymond. Fuck that. Fuck that. Fuck that. Ugly, hideously so. You know, Patricia Heaton was the only bearable part of that show (well, Peter Boyle rules -- I'll give them that), and she looked gross tonight. Damn you Emmy voters! Les Moonves must have had Julie Chen go down on a whole lot of voters. After all, she is his personal whore.

Epilogue:

The high of Lost winning was immediately taken away from me by the win of Everybody Loves Raymond. How utterly, utterly wrong. I agreed with many of the awards -- understood many of the others and utterly disagreed with only a few. Still, I can't say I totally loved tonight's show. Ellen wasn't on the top of her game. She was kind of funny, but seeing Hugh Jackman and Whoopie present the last two awards, I couldn't help but wish that one of them had hosted instead.

Desperate Housewives got pretty shut-out, despite all the hype. That honestly doesn't surprise me, but what DID was the fact that ELR won so many damn awards. At least Arrested Development won writing -- that makes me smile. The actor awards, sans Raymond, were good. Seeing Zach Braff at the Emmy's was great. I'm also glad Rachel Bilson got to present, after her shut-out last year. She looked awesome (I said that in "The Good" but it is worth mentioning again), as did Mischa Barton -- who looked sober!

The tributes to Jennings and Carson were great. That was the highlight, in my opinion. The "In Memoriam" section was great too. Once again, the "Emmy Idol" segments were a dud. I don't understand why that was approved. My guess is that the participation was pretty low, so I doubt they'll ever do that again. I also was NOT a fan of the opening segment. I much prefer the parody skits -- a la the Oscars -- to seeing Earth, Wind and Fire and The Black-eyed Peas perform on-stage. Neither group screams "Emmy" to me. Why the Emmy people would try to re-create the Grammy's -- a show that no one watches (well, I guess more than the Tony's -- right cj_keyz ;-) LOVE YOU) is beyond me.

Overall, I give tonight's show a 7 out of 10. Despite the attempts to make it "fresh" -- it seemed a little stale. Maybe they should hire Hugh Jackman next year. If he made the Tony's worth watching (thanks again cj_keyz), he should totally do the Emmy's. I would also be happy if Gary Shandling hosted...that would rule.

All right -- Spader is talking to Giuleanna on E! -- so I'm out!
