Notorious, because Cary Grant is so good when he's so bad.

Note: I have previously reviewed Notorious in this community. However, that was over two years ago, and I am currently trying to go through and improve my old reviews. I rewatched, researched, and generally thought about Notorious some more and came up with this review. It still has some of the old review, but in my opinion, this is more cogent ( Read more... )

Man, Hitchcock. What a fabulous bastard. The things he managed to get away with in his films... I'm suuuper excited to rewatch Notorious with this review fresh on my mind, after I make my way through his early works.

No kidding. He really pushed moral boundaries within the studio system. I think that the relationship in Vertigo is probably the only one that can rival the perversity of that in Notorious (although I will admit to not having seen all of Hitch's films... so yeah...).

Vertigo has ALWAYS disturbed me. A LOT. I think a large reason for that is that I've always seen Jimmy as a purely sweet and honorable guy, and to see him play the obsessed psycho type was mentally and emotionally traumatizing. GOOD OL' HITCH.

THAT ICON! BWAHAHAHA!

I think I need to rewatch Vertigo. Especially in light of rewatching a number of Hitch's earlier stuff. I really think there's a case for saying that Jimmy Stewart's character in Vertigo is the most Hitchcockian-emotionally-shackled-and-disturbed male.

re: Jimmy being purely sweet and honorable - but that's what Hitch DID! He saw dark streaks in people that the rest of Hollywood thought were purely charming! Yes, there IS something disturbing in his role... but gawd, how brave!

I heart my new icons. This one's for you, dearie.
