This is also one of my favorites. Not favorite favorites, but definitely way up there. Recently - like, three days ago - I rewatched the film with my mother. She was watching it for the very first time. She laughed and laughed and laughed.
Naturally, zombres is spot on in her review. Mais, there is one aspect of the film she didn't address that I was really struck by in my recent re-viewing.
This is a sexy, sexy film.
It's something that I didn't wholly notice when I watched the movie as a 17 year old.
First of all, there's the scene with "Daphne" (Jack Lemmon) and Sugar (Marilyn Monroe) together in the train bunk. Supposedly, she's tickling his toes, but you basically see hands reaching offscreen and Jack Lemmon looking wildly uncomfortable - and turned on. It's amazing that scene got past the censors. (well, actually, it's amazing the entire movie got past the censors.)
Then there's some of Marilyn's outfits. Ahem.
She wears this dress in both white and black versions. When she turns around, you see that it's open down to the very very top of her butt cheeks. She's basically naked when she wears this dress, and she wears one of the two versions for about half the film.
Alright, so she's already wearing the naked dress. THEN she goes and sings "I Wanna Be Loved By You." Watch.
Notice how, as soon as Wilder switches from the long shot to the medium shot, the spotlight for Monroe is INITIALLY bathing her in light, but then quickly zooms in so that only her face is lit.
That's, um, because the censors thought it was too risque. She looked TOO naked, the spotlight was too big, so it had to be reshot so that we couldn't see her naked bewbs in the spotlight.
As Joe E. Brown would say, ZOWEE!
By the way, rumor has it that Monroe was pregnant during the shoot and had a miscarriage, thus accounting for her larger size. Marilyn is usually more petite than this - she was actually very concerned with eating healthy and exercising. But she does look amazing.
The scene where Sugar is romancing Junior (aka Tony Curtis) on the yacht, kissing him over and over and over and over again, is almost too hot to handle. Those kisses! They steam up not only Curtis' glasses but the entire scene! Apparently, Marilyn Monroe, to make it as sexy as possible, whispered very dirty things in Tony Curtis' ear during the shoot to make him, um, aroused. It worked. This is a sexy, sexy, sexy scene with absolutely no nudity. I love how Billy Wilder gives us a chance to cool off by intercutting the blatant sex part with the hilarious tango sequence.
I totally agree with Angie, this is a wonderful, funny film. But it's sexy as all hell too. In my opinion, one of the hottest films I've ever seen!
