"And they got away with this in the 50's?!"

It's Elizabeth Taylor month on TCM. (Not a huge fan of Liz Taylor, but I was willing to give her a second chance.)

And can I just say, that was one of the ODDEST movies I've ever seen. My Mom and I were constantly throwing out ideas of what "really happened to Cousin Sebastian".

We thought maybe he'd raped Katherine and Aunt Violet was trying to cover it up with the false accusations of insanity. That maybe Katherine killed him in a fit of jealousy, and then suffered a mental breakdown. That perhaps Violet and Sebastian were closer than they should be.

And then the whammy at the end? The hugely drawn out story describing a procession of homemade drums, and "the white hot roads", and the crumbling ruins? To cap it all off with Sebastian being EATEN ALIVE? WHAT THE HELL!?!?!?

And Violet was simultaneously frightening, sickening, and THE BITCH FROM HELL!!!! The idea of having your NIECE lobotomized, just to keep people from knowing your son had homosexual tendencies and was, ahem *cough cough*, eaten alive by ravenous natives?

Let's just cap this all off by saying I'll probably have disturbing dreams tonight.

Uh.... yeah.
