Second Childhood; Three
PG-13; EunHae; Fluff/Romance
They met just as little boys do, over action figurines and imaginary explosions. What they don't expect is for it to last.

Desk buddies. Lab partners. Part of the same lunch group. Best friends.

Before long, the pair were inseparable. Donghae had gotten tired of the raised eyebrows and snickers that Sungmin and Kyuhyun always gave him every time he announced during home room that he was going to have lunch with Hyukjae instead of having it with them as usual. Eventually, he had simply dragged Hyukjae over, introduced everyone and sat down to have his own lunch in embarrassed silence.

He had been nothing short of mortified after Sungmin and Kyuhyun had started spilling all his secrets to Hyukjae the minute he had shut his mouth. His obsession with the Wolverine figurine, all the times he had tried to find Hyukjae, how he was scared of the dark, his love for Finding Nemo, one by one he watched in horror as Hyukjae's face grew more and more stunned with each revealed secret.

Kyuhyun had just finished telling Hyukjae about how Donghae reacted and spaced out in every single Math class they had ever had when a slow and methodic thudding sound was heard and the three of them turned to see Donghae hitting his head resignedly on the cafeteria table.

'I knew this was a bad idea,' Donghae groaned.

Kyuhyun eyed him cynically. 'If you knew it was a bad idea, why'd you introduce us then?'

'Because you guys wouldn't shut up about it!'

'Exactly,' Sungmin chirped in. 'We did it on purpose.'

Donghae stared around wildly at the three people grinning at him with poorly disguised glee and amusement at his predicament and he pouted at his mashed potatoes.

'Nobody loves me.'

'Oh don't worry Donghae,' the corner of Sungmin's mouth lifted a little and he sneaked a glance at Hyukjae who was currently being regaled by Kyuhyun with the story of how Donghae had thought he could build his own Iron Man armour, 'I'm pretty sure someone does.'

-

'The new X-Men film is coming out soon,' Hyukjae began conversationally even as Donghae rolled over from where he was lying on his back next to Hyukjae's bed, staring up at Hyukjae's ceiling while he contemplated life.

'Uh huh.'

'I'm just saying,' Hyukjae shrugged as he flipped a page of the current comic he was reading. Something about Deadpool and Wolverine or something, Donghae didn't bother. There were too many characters for him to remember. All he needed to remember was Wolverine anyway. 'We could go watch it together.'

'A movie?' Donghae's mouth ran dry and he gulped a little. The idea of being in a dark and enclosed area with Hyukjae for an extended period of time made him feel lightheaded. In the few months that they had been friends, Donghae had been inching closer and closer to the point where he was going to soon blurt out that he was very attracted to Hyukjae. What started out as pure friendship and adoration carried forward from childhood had morphed into an uncomfortable squirming feeling low in his belly every time Hyukjae slung an arm around his shoulders. Hyukjae was a very attractive teenager, nobody could deny that. Well Kyuhyun did on a daily basis, but Kyuhyun didn't have admirers confessing to him and leaving chocolates in his locker like Hyukjae did, did he? So Kyuhyun was not reliable.

'Well?'

Donghae rolled his shoulders awkwardly, avoiding eye contact with Hyukjae. 'I don't know much about X-Men.'

'It's okay! I'll teach you,' Hyukjae grinned. 'Take it as initiation into the X-Men universe. Besides, both our favourites are from Marvel. It shouldn't be too hard for you to like what I like and vice versa.'

'But - ' Donghae floundered, how was he supposed to say I can't sit in a dark place with you next to me because I'm terrified that I will hold your hand or hug you unexpectedly without him sounding like a creep. He had never done the dating thing much, preferring to stick with himself and his friends instead of paying attention to the girls or guys that thronged his school. 'But I - '

'Donghae,' Hyukjae looked up from his comic and actually looked at him seriously. 'I'm not going to hate you or anything if you don't get the movie. It's just company.'

Donghae scrunched up his face before finally directing his gaze towards Hyukjae. The pout that Hyukjae had killed off any lingering protests gathering in Donghae's mouth and he sighed. He would just have to keep his hands to himself and squash all romantic feelings towards Hyukjae before then. They were bros. Just best friends and bros. 'Yeah okay, I'll go.'

Hyukjae brightened up immediately. 'You're the best Hae and you're going to love it I know you will!'

Donghae flung a pillow at his head. 'I'm just going there so I can throw popcorn at all the idiots cooing over Wolverine.'

'I do not coo! I do manly exclamations of awe!'

'Tell that to the recording in my phone.'

'You have a recording?!'

'I'll take it to my grave!' Donghae yelled even as Hyukjae dived for his phone. 'You'll never take me alive!'

Hyukjae laughed as he rolled over Donghae. 'I don't have to take you alive you idiot all I have to do is take your phone.'

The wrestling was nothing but platonic but as Hyukjae fake punched him in the gut to get him to turn over, and as he scissored his legs, pinning Hyukjae as he rolled over him and as he laughed uncontrollably at all the tickling that Hyukjae was subjecting him to, he knew that he was going to have to face a very uncomfortable three hours in the darkness without jumping on his best friend.

-

'Salty popcorn.'

'Wow I didn't know that when I agreed to be your best friend that you were going to be so weird,' Hyukjae deadpanned as he pulled out his wallet. 'We'll have sweet popcorn please, and a large soda.'

Donghae gagged. 'Sure let's drown ourselves in sugar and diabetes thank you very much.'

'You're weird. I still don't understand your dislike for all things sweet and sugary. Do you dislike the Powerpuff Girls too?'

'It's my preference, you don't have to be a jerk about it,' Donghae slugged him playfully in the arm. 'And admitting that you know that fact about the Powerpuff Girls is so gay.' He bought a pack of chips for himself, calming himself down as they walked into the theatre and found their seats. Buying his own food, that was good, it meant that they weren't on a date. Not that he was admitting to being the person on a date who would require food bought for him. It calmed him down, eased him enough to lean over and playfully steal some of Hyukjae's popcorn, gagging and coughing immediately while reaching for the soda.

Hyukjae patted his head condescendingly as he handed the soda over and Donghae gulped the drink thirstily, washing the sweet taste from his mouth. He didn't even notice that Hyukjae had left until he was back with a small cup in his hand.

'What is this?' It was too dark to see anything anymore; the movie was starting and Donghae nearly went cross-eyed staring into the little cup that Hyukjae held out to him.

Hyukjae just sighed and took his hand, making sure his hands were grasping the cup before he let go. (Donghae made sure to check that he was still breathing when Hyukjae's hands left his.) 'It's salty popcorn okay? I thought you'd might want some.'

Donghae clutched the cup tightly as a wave of affection surged through him. His fingers tingled and forcibly restrained himself from reaching over and linking his fingers with Hyukjae's. A sound emanated from the speakers and a hush fell over the crowd as the opening credits rolled. Hyukjae's eyes snapped front and he started munching away happily at his popcorn.

Unable to stop himself, Donghae leaned over, just inches from resting on Hyukjae's shoulder. 'Thank you,' he whispered and Hyukjae turned, the smile on his lips visible from the light reflecting off his teeth.

And then the movie began.

Donghae lost count of the number of characters they showed almost as soon as it began. How was he supposed to know who was relevant and who wasn't?! So there was a guy who controlled metal, some soul sucking vampire like woman who screamed really loudly and some dude in a wheelchair. Was the dude in the wheelchair using the wheelchair as some sort of armour like Iron Man did? His mind drifted and his head drooped a little. Where was the action in this? Were people just going to talk and talk and talk?

Hyukjae looked over and smiled fondly as Donghae's eyes slowly slid shut. His hand went immediately to Donghae's hair, smoothing it gently, so gently in fact that Donghae barely stirred. Catching the cup of popcorn before it slid right out of Donghae's hands, he settled it in the holder and turned his attention back to the movie. His jolt of excitement when Wolverine finally appeared on screen startled Donghae and he sat up straight, blinking rapidly at the screen.

'That's Wolverine?' He leaned over and whispered as he watched the dude in the white singlet get whaled on by a guy twice his size.

Hyukjae nodded excitedly.

'He's not very useful is he?' Donghae turned up his nose as he watched Wolverine's face meet the hard ground.

Hyukjae growled, sending a delicious shiver through Donghae's body. 'Just watch.'

Donghae shrugged, leaning back to watch the fight enfold. The girl was pretty, he'd give the casting that much, as she stared wide-eyed at the fight going on in the cage. What he didn't expect was when Wolverine's claws sheathed out, shocking everyone on screen and off screen.

'Now that's bad ass isn't it?' Hyukjae hissed into his ear and Donghae nodded, forgetting that he couldn't see him. For what it was worth, having armour built into you was kick ass. Iron Man had to have his put on. Not that he wasn't kick ass.

Donghae grudgingly accepted a mental tie between the two characters and patted around his seat for his popcorn. After finding it, he promised himself he would pay attention to at least half the movie.

For Hyukjae at least.

-

Well Donghae nearly made it. He paid attention to just enough to nod and chime in a little with Hyukjae's hyper commentary on the movie. Not half, but just enough. There was a blue naked woman and someone with flaming red hair. Oh and a jelly man. That was probably all that he could recall.

Hyukjae rambled on and on about the movie as they were taking the bus back and Donghae sat, contented just to listen to the sound of his voice. It was between Hyukjae talking about somebody called Cyclops and Sabretooth that he drifted off, head moving back and forth with the motion of the bus. The movement just out of the corner of Hyukjae's eye caught his attention and he raised his left arm just in time to catch Donghae from falling out of his seat, pulling him back gently to pillow his head on his shoulder.

The soft snuffling sound that Donghae made had Hyukjae biting down on his tongue to keep from cooing and he smiled, happy to simply sit there for the entirety of the bus ride listening to Donghae's breathing.

He shook Donghae gently as they neared their stop. Well Donghae's stop mainly, Hyukjae still had to walk a couple of blocks but he didn't trust Donghae to get home safe on his own. He'd end up on the other end of the city if he wasn't walked home properly.

They made small talk as they neared Donghae's home, with Hyukjae wisely diverting the topic away from X-Men as they chatted. He was pretty sure Donghae had enough of X-Men for a day.

Donghae dug around in his pockets for his keys at his gate as Hyukjae hummed ever so patiently.

'Thanks for walking me home Hyuk, you really didn't have to.'

'Sure I had to, you might end up in a ditch somewhere otherwise.'

Donghae socked him in the arm, whining unknowingly as Hyukjae laughed at him. 'Why do you always have to be such an ass?'

'Cause you're adorable.' Hyukjae cooed and patted his hair but Donghae shoved his hand away half-heartedly.

'Shut up,' he mumbled, heart racing at a thousand miles per second.

'Hey,' Hyukjae's voice was serious then and Donghae looked up confusedly. 'Thank you for going with me to watch the movie. I know it wasn't the most interesting of movies for you. But I wouldn't have watched it with anyone else.'

Heat flooded Donghae's face and he prayed fervently that Hyukjae wouldn't be able to see it in the darkness. 'It was nothing. Just a movie.'

'I know you love me,' Hyukjae grinned.

'Yeah yeah whatever.'

Donghae turned to go but Hyukjae caught his arm and Donghae cocked his head, unsure of what was going on.

'Hae, I - ' Hyukjae swallowed. 'I really do like you. And I'm sorry that this was such a crappy first date.'

Donghae's forehead creased confusedly. This was a date?

'I really really like you. And Sungmin told me to ask you out before someone else did, and I was basically terrified that someone would and so I did. And I planned a horrible first date because I couldn't think of anything else to do and you didn't like the move and now I feel like such an - '

'Kiss me you fool.'

Hyukjae's head snapped up. 'What?'

'Stop rambling and kiss me you idiot, if you want to make up for the horrible movie.'

'The movie wasn't horrible!'

Donghae stared. 'That's really what you want to talk about right now?'

'No,' Hyukjae stepped closer. 'I'd rather not talk at all.'

Hyukjae leaned forward and their lips barely brushed but Donghae's breathing had already sped up at the proximity of Hyukjae. The feelings that he tried to bury only hours before the movie came flaring back up again, heat suffusing through his body as he felt Hyukjae's hands settle tremblingly on his hips, pulling him closer and closer until their lips finally touched. They clung together for a moment, lips pressing together firmly before they separated.

'Holy wow,' Hyukjae's eyes were wide and stunned. 'That was - '

'Yeah,' Donghae's breathing was just as ragged. 'I like you too.'

Hyukjae was silent for awhile before his face split into his trademark wide smile. 'Great.'

Donghae hit him in the shoulder, struggling against his grip but Hyukjae was too strong for him and he had to settle for staring up into his stupid face and his stupid grin. 'Is that all you can say?!'

Hyukjae laughed some more, drawing him closer and kissing him again, harder this time, and Donghae could feel his body bowing and arching into Hyukjae as they enjoyed their second kiss.

They pulled apart after a brief moment again, and Donghae pressed their foreheads together as Hyukjae stroked at his hipbone gently.

'I'm forcing you to watch the Iron Man movie with me if and when they do make it, to make up for this travesty of a movie.'

Hyukjae simply smiled and tilted his head, leaning in again for another kiss. Long overdue, his mind told him, he had been wanting to kiss Donghae for months.

'Deal.'
