Sweet Retreat

The bug that's plagued me all week is finally lifting and I feel much better. It was a blessing in disguise- allowing me some much needed rest and time to explore our new home and neighborhood.

The birds here are abundant and diverse and it's been glorious spring weather too. I keep finding little artifacts from the family that lived here before: toy trucks, Lego pieces, tiny bits of dolly paraphenialla that have to be from something sinister like Polly Pocket etc. I've collected some of them into a basket for my God-daughter's visits. I'm unpacking my boxes first so I'm taking care to leave plenty of space for S's things in drawers & closets.

The biggest task will be combining our libraries. We purchased three tall bookshelves from the Stanford University surplus dept which match nicely with my bedroom furniture. My three large pine bookcases are in the living room and I think we'll have two more in the guest bedroom. Serious culling will still need to be done. I gave away many before moving, but more will have to go.

The still that settles over the forest at night is amazing. Even with neighbors close it's silent. I hear some trees creaking and fog drips on the roof and occasional little animal rustles, but that's it! The first night here I laid in bed and couldn't sleep for hours just listening to the quiet.

I'm going to drag myself into the office again today for a few hours and then head to my old place to pick-up my cats. I wanted to bring them up when I'd be able to spend a lot of time with them. I think it take some time for them to adjust, but eventually they will be much happier here. I bought them new tags & collars with bells to hopefully prevent any bird carnage. Although, the Stellar Jays just might be the ones inflicting damage on them.
