Yay, my Proteus made the cut!

The default composer file is eh, okay. But get a copy of Protean Drums and Virtuoso for it, and VST opens its wings and flies.

Virtual Studio Technology is a plug-in format that allows makers of music software to create instruments and effects that will work with any compatible host software, which is most of them. They're primarily a Windows thing, although there are some for Mac; not many for Linux, as licensing the tech from Steinberg can be a bit troublesome.

I should try a few of those.

The only one in the list I use -- and I use it *all the time* -- is Voxengo Span. If the others are its peers for usefulness or quality, that alone makes them interesting to me.
(Being a computer geek, I tend to use the effects that ship with Reaper because they let me play with actual numbers instead of 1-to-10 scaled dials.)
