photo update - beauty shots
last week my cousin jehane came by with one of her wedding gowns, her gold jewelry and a boxful of makeup. we went to town...
the dress:

(that's muriam, my friend from georgetown. we wanted to dress her up too, but she opted out...)

the bridesmaids:
from left to right: jehane (with son khalil); zahra, jehane's mom, wife of the uncle I stayed with in Oran; me in zahra's white el-bayadh dress, traditional to the region; grandma
then pirate grandma let her hair down:
the color comes from red henna - she's been using it for years.
my grandma's two braids get wrapped around her head, and then the headscarves go on.
but I love looking at her like this - my magic pirate princess grandma.
