To treat, or not to treat? That is the question. My grandmother (a woman who would make the Wicked Witch of the West look kind) has insisted that I keep the lights off in my apartment this Halloween night, because she doesn't want to deal with trick or treaters.
First off, last time I checked, it was my name on the duplex mortgage, so I'm under no obligation to follow her "suggestion". And honestly, it irks me that she thinks she's calling the shots like this. I don't consider seniority in age a valid reason for respect (you just got lucky in the genetic lottery, as far as I'm concerned); I've met elderly people who are the most hate filled bigots and fools. Conversely, I've had the pleasure of knowing numerous young people wise far beyond their years.
But, I digress. This is about candy, not character. I'm leaning towards handing out candy and just putting a sign on her door that says, quite simply, "Please knock on other door". Voila! That problem is solved right there.
Mostly, it's just that I want to hand it out--and I'd be handing out the good stuff, like Snickers--because I love Halloween; it's one of the most fun holidays out there and it's very slowly dying off, I believe. More and more people are turning the porch light off and glaring at fun loving kids through slightly parted curtains. It's one night a year, folks, and for goodness sake, it's only a $3.00 bag of candy if you want to go cheap and get lollipops. It won't kill anyone to do a bit to make a child's evening fun and memorable.
So, run to the store, buy a bag of candy, and don't forget to compliment the costumes, come Monday night. It's not only for the kids, you know. It's a time to let your hair down too and indulge your inner imp. Honestly, how often is that behavior not only allowed, but encouraged? See y'all on the dark side . . . *cackles*
