Walter talks to the spirits to distract himself, so he's a lot more patient than he usually would be with people. He has special affinity with the light and water spirits, and had trouble harnessing fire and earth magic.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the first spirit Walter contacts after speaking with Stella about the spirits is Nala; Walter has a bad habit of getting himself hurt, and knowing healing magic would probably be a good idea. Like all the other spirits, he learned how to talk to Nala by himself; with his holy water affinity, it took him a little shorter than two weeks to master healing. Over the months, he hasn't contacted the spirit often, so his skill has dipped a little.
Sona ⌠Water⌡

Walter started speaking to Sona not long after he started speaking to Nala, though he heard Sona's voice much earlier on than Nala's; the lesser spirits that called him names were usually lesser spirits in the water while he was swimming. He's not fond of Sona or her slightly snobby attitude, but he's learned to deal with Ruto, so ... Sona is nothing in comparison. With his affinity, he learned how to harness Sona's power in a little over two weeks.
Eferin ⌠Fire⌡

Walter didn't talk to Eferin until he had made a good "relationship" with Sona; the water spirit was quite ... demanding about not talking to other spirits while "getting to know her." Hearing Eferin was not particularly hard, considering Walter lived in the woods almost 24/7 before Shirley appeared, and even without a great affinity to fire, Walter picked up on the spirit bond in a month.
Hyt ⌠Light⌡
Established contact in early June-early July, then late July-early August 2008

Being outdoors all the time, in a generally sunny place like Luceti, and always alone other than the animals. Walter started speaking with Hyt around the same time as Eferin, but didn't speak as intensely with it (yes, Hyt is an it). He spoke to Hyt a lot while he was building Ruto's lakehouse and Mark's training center, and continues to speak to it often now that his closer companions have disappeared.
Faeren ⌠Earth⌡

After Shirley appeared, Walter spent less time on the lakeside and in the forest ... but he was traveling through often on his way to town. He began talking to Faeren in between, well, protecting Shirley. His relationship with Faeren has progressed since he began chopping trees to build the training center.
Tsinku ⌠Electricity⌡

While Walter has spent a lot of time working outside, it wasn't until he started building the training center that he was constantly exposed to the wide, open areas that Tsinku prefers. With lightning crystal eres already in his repertoire, Walter took to the electricity/lightning spirit fairly quickly.
Kipinn ⌠Wind⌡

Kipinn is an inquisitive spirit that Walter has considered a bit of a nuisance at the back of his mind while he's flying around. Considering Walter's impatience with annoying people, it should come as no surprise that it took him a long time to get past Kipinn's annoyingly flighty lesser wind spirits.
