Summary: Written for my winning bidder unflexible in help_haiti. I like the idea of Spock and Uhura together. This is my take on how it might have started. Many thanks to tesserae_ for the lightening beta.

Thank you doesn't seem like enough from me, either, because it's so very gratifying to have a story work that well for someone, especially when you take the time to think and comment about it.

I haven't read much of the fic that's out there, because I have a very set, old-school view of Spock and of Vulcans, based on far too much effort in my youth trying to learn what was out there in the days before the internet. So, yeah, it throws me out of a fic when someone writes that Spock sweats, and then I have to consciously remind myself that he's half human, and so maybe. It also throws me out when I read a lot of overt public displays in a story, because what we saw on screen was them under extreme duress. He would not have kissed her on the transport pad if he didn't know there was a reasonably high chance of dying.

Uhura is in no way a fool, and when I wrote this I stepped back and thought about where her line would be between patience with the a culture she doesn't quite understand and not letting him have all the say in the relationship. She doesn't have to beat him over the head with it as she does with Kirk in the bar, but she will not just follow his lead. The could and should have given her more agency in the movie, more ways to show us how brilliant and capable she is, and I hope they do in the next one.
