emo is not new and cheezy lyrics

Apparently, although the term is new, emo is not. I found a really old CD of music from when I entered college. I remember loving the music from the CD, the voice of the female lead singer remains one of my favorites ever - so beautiful and laced with a tinge of haunting. But the lyrics, I read them again today and realized that the prose was flat out emo - no reading between the lines or figuring out the theme that is more characteristic of present day emo. For example...

"So your pain becomes another souvenir
And your souvenirs become your whole world"
