Courtney and I left the house at around 5am after she was having a fair amount of contractions. After getting to John Dempsey hospital in Farmington, the doc decided to our surprise that that was the day Aiden would be coming. Court had to deal with a few hours of contractions, but eventually the anesthesiologist gave her an epidural, which allowed her to relax for the majority of the day. To speed things up, a doc hooked Court up with some drugs to speed up her contractions, but it was causing Aiden’s heart rate to decrease- it was a little scary. At around 4PM, Court started pushing with her contractions. It was so surreal. Roughly three hours later, I could see the top of Aiden’s head, but I had a feeling it wasn’t going to happen naturally. The doc confirmed this and scheduled Courtney to be wheeled into the operating room for a C-Section. While waiting for her turn, the epidural medication ran out, leaving her with intensely painful contractions for about an hour and a half. Finally, Court was rolled in the operating room while I suited up in scrubs so I could sit with her. I was pacing around anxiously for what seemed like an eternity waiting for the nurse to let me in. Eventually she waved me over and I discovered Courtney on her back and a chair waiting for me by her head. As soon as I sat down, the doctors began. The procedure was very quick, and seeing Aiden’s little head pop out was the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen. It’s really difficult to put into words the feeling you get when you see your child for the first time. So many thoughts and questions run through your head, like, what does he sound like? Is he breathing okay? Do the doctors look concerned about anything? Thankfully, he was absolutely perfect! At 10:32PM Aiden was all the way out and quickly handed off to the nurses who cleaned him up, checked his vitals, and handed him to daddy. That moment was absolutely the happiest day of my life thus far. One of the first things I noticed about Aiden was his long eye lashes as he was squinting a tired eye from the bright lights. The nurses then took him to be cleaned and whatever it is newborns need. I left the room, and proceeded to cry my eyes out. Being hit with all those crazy feelings can really break you down! I think it was the relief that he was so perfect in every way. He weighed 7.28 lbs, and was 19.5“ long.
