2. Cyclops was subsumed/assimilated into the final form of Apocalypse, basically resulting in his death. By the time he was returned to life, he was a changed man. He's not sure who he is or what he wants. Jean and he tried to work things out, but he ended up choosing Emma Frost instead. As a side note, Jean Grey is dead again.
3. No. But you should check out the Cable/Deadpool limited series that's coming out soon.
4. Are you talking about the road trip book? Cyclops is basically team leader, so much as they have one these days. If Gambit was team leader, it must have been brief. Probably during the Onslaught story, which was some dumb shit.
5. Most of the Gen X cast are now officially X-Men, albiet they are on the "second tier" book, Uncanny X-Men, which is not particularly well-written. Monet made a breif appearence in Morrison's run on New X-Men, during the "New Worlds" storyline. Husk is dead, I think? That's what the last Uncanny X-Men arc was all about, some played-out Romeo and Juliet storyline with her and Angel. Chamber has had some cool moments and is definantly the most apt pupil of the GenX bunch. I expect to see him on "the real team" before long. He also guest stars in "Weapon X" quite alot, which is a pretty decent series, even if it doesn't make much sense.
6. X-Force is defunct. The book was cancelled, but a new creative team saved it. However, they invented an entirely new team with no connection to the old X-Force, and the book was COMPLETELY different. It was very good, however. Hard to describe. Liefeld threw a hissyfit though, so it got cancelled. It lasted from X-Force 119 to 129, if I remember correctly. It was relaunched as X-Statix a few months later and has been pretty awesome, but not quite as good as the final "X-Force" run was. But, as I said, the
"real" X-Force is defunct. Cannonball spent some time on Uncanny X-Men but I think he is now part of X-Corps UK, which means periodic mentions in the main X-Men title, but no actual book that he's part of.

A few years ago, Grant Morrison took over the main X-Men title and it was rechristened "New X-Men". It has been, in my not so humble opinion, the fucking greatest set of X-Men stories ever. Most of them are in trade
Vol 1. E is for Extinction
Vol 2. Imperial
Vol 3. New Worlds
Vol 4. Riot at Xaviers
Vol 5. Assault on Weapon Plus
Vol 6. Planet X
and the final story arc of Morrison's run is coming to a close in #154 next week, but it will be released in trade soon as Vol 7. Here Comes Tomorrow.
Jean Grey died at the end of Vol. 6, btw. #150 if you're going by the single issues.
After Morrison's run is up, it's going back to just plain old X-Men, and one of the worst writers in comicdom is taking over, so really, only Morrison's run is essential at the moment. You should get them. They will restore your faith in the X-Men.
I have the first 3 volumes in trade paperback, if you want to borrow them. You must take great care of them, though. I am sick of loaning shit out and getting it back bent.
