The forest was peaceful....until an abrupt crack filled the air, birds fluttered their wings and soared into the air to escape from the commotion. A singe tree amongst the green sea collapsed to the ground. "DAMN IT!" shouted Sanosuke, not satisfied with what he was doing. Sure he was destroying gigantic trees with one punch but where was the improvement? Wasn't the point of training improvement!?
Sanouske walked up to another tree and threw another devastating punch....with a loud continous creak, the tree just like the previous one hit the ground.
Sanosuke gave an irratated sigh as he approached his tenth tree. "This is doing me no good, the way i'm going, i'm only going to end up destroying the forest". Sanosuke's eyes narrowed as he focused all this attention on his new target. "YAH!" war cried Sanosuke as he threw all his strength and weight into his next punch. Half of the base of the tree exploded, sending large chunk and small splinters of wood everywhere. "damn it!" cursed Sanosuke still not impressed with his improvement...
The tree began to creak as it lurched towards Sanosuke. The brunettes eyes widened as the tree began to fall in his direction and not go the other way. "AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!" cried Sanosuke as he span around and began to run away from the tree-though instead of going sidewards and getting out of the tree's path, he idiotically ran directly infront of it, trying to out run it. He only got so far before he felt the large bodied tree collide with his head.....the pain he felt was excruciating though it only lasted a few seconds, right before everything went black...he felt himself slipping into a flash back.
Ten Years Ago
Snow filled the air of the brush wood. Standing on a cliff, stood a nine year old Sanosuke, looking up to his captain in admiration. Captain Sagara spoke in a serious tone of voice, differen't from his usual soft and low tone. "Pay close attention Sanosuke" began Souzou, as he gazed down the cliff at the government army. "a new era will begin, finally the oppression of the weak will come to an end forever. It will be a time for all people no matter who they are to be treated as equals under the government-we will have a fresh start, we of the Sekihoutai will lead this movement".
Sanosuke wore a childish smile and said gleefully "we all have to work hard and do our best to create the new world as soon as we can, isn't that right Captain? I've heard that many times before". Souzou turned around and wore a small grin. Being sure to ruffle Sanosuke's spiked hair as he walked by. "hey Captain-" called Sanosuke as he followed his leader. Captain Sagara stopped walking and listened to the rest of Sanosuke's sentence. "when the times comes-when everybody are equals, do you think i'll be able to get a last name too?". "sure" replied Souzou, not seeing why the child couldn't have a last name. "Can i take yours? I'd really like it if my last name was Sagara, just like yours Captain? Do you think that would be alright?" requested Sanosuke with a bright face. Souzou looked over his shoulder and said "Sanosuke Sagara huh?". After a moments thought, Souzou chuckled "i don't think so, you should pick something that doesn't sound so wierd". Sanosuke simply chuckled at his Captains response.
The galloping of a horse began to grow loud. Out from a bush came the stallone, carrying a broad faced man with long bushy white hair. "I take it you are the captain of Sekihoutai, Troop 1, are you not?" questioned the man in a deep and authoritive voice. Captain Sagara simply stared at the government official-he had no clue why the man was seeking him. Being greeted by only silence, the governmental figure introduced himself and stated his purpose for searching for him. "I am Takawaki Shindo, staff officer of the government army. I've come from headquarters to give you orders directly from the government general".
Although Souzou's eyes didn't remotely widen, his voice did show some surprise "the government general?". Sanosuke taking a step forward piped up "huh? Captain..".
After gathering the rest of the Sekihoutai, Souzou leaded his unit to a small area ennclosed by curtains hanging from large logs of wood that had been planting into the ground. Near a small camp fire, stood Shindo. "The Sekihoutai isn't a real army of the government?" questioned one of the groups members, confused by what Mr.Shindo had told them. "please explain the meaning completely Mr.Shindo" asked Souzou, his tone still soft but revealed traces of passive agression. Shindo wearing a stern, stone like face, answered his question. "You went of on your own and spread lies to the people that their taxes would be cut in half, causing severe confusion amongst the masses this unsupportative action has caused the government to unfortunately lose faith you. Your crimes have been found inexcusable. Everyone involved in this false army shall be executed".
"what are you talking about? we were just following direct orders from the government general! Thats all" argued a man from within the Sekihoutai ranks. "i understand..." said Souzou, drawing all the attention back onto him. "Although the Sekihoutai was following orders, the plan to cut taxes in half must be bothering the government. They promised to cut taxes in the first place in order to get the farmers to support them. But now the government is having financial problems and they cannot possibly go through with the plan. So they decided to make the Sekihoutai the escape goat and say that we were nothing but a false army spreading empty rumours, isn't that right Mr.Shindo!?"
Shindo shifted one hand onto his hip and simply remarked "what are you going to do if it is?".
"we fought bravely believing that the government was right and just and that we were doing our part to help those weaker than us...we were dreaming of the promise of a new era!" said Souzou.
Shindo's lips slowly turned into a wide, greedy smirk as he stated in a matter of fact tone of voice. "Sorry to dissapoint you but such idealisom doesn't work in this time of age. This is not about good VS evil. It's about the strong getting the pot of gold and the weak getting nothing at all. In the end, what it all boils down to is that the winners are right and just and the losers are nothing but dusts in the wind-just like the Sekihoutai"
"what!?" questioned a wide eyed member.
Shindo extended his right hand and clicked, at that moment the sound of material being ripped filled the air, the curtains fell to the ground, revealing a platoon of soliders armed with guns. The Sekihotai members gave a few uneasy murmurs as they began to draw their swords. Sanosuke held tightly onto his sheathed katana-even though it was virtually bigger than him.
"The government would like to thank you for you work, you're dimissed". As Shindo finished his sentence, the clicks of guns being being loaded filled the air. "Captain!" said Sanosuke as he held up his katana and offered it. Souzou accepted the katana of Sanosuke though instead of instantly drawing it, he knocked Sanosuke down to the ground behind him. The sound of bullets cackled in the air, followed by the soft thuds of dead bodies. Souzou grunted as he felt some of the bullets make impact with his leg.
To the Captain's defence, the Sekihoutai unit charged towards their gun bearing foes while Sanosuke made his escape with Captain Sagara-who was being helped by two soldiers...
Five minutes later the four found themselve trudging along a wide forest path. Sweat poured down Sanosuke face as he travelled five paces behind the other three, using his katana as a walking stick. The child's mind was blank, he was still surprised that government was doing this.....shock and fear swelled inside him. He was only nine-too much of a tender age to die at the hands of a firing squad.
Sanosuke looked over his shoulder...the fiery orbs of flames dancing on tourches was nearing. The two men ahead of Sanosuke took note of their persuers. Placing the Captain on Sanosuke back, one solider said. "we'll hold them back long enough for you two make an escape". Sanosuke wanted to believe their words but he could tell by their widened eyes that they had doubts of ever returning.
His predictions were correct, the only thing that he heard was the firing of bullets and their blood chilling cries of pain. Sanosuke's panting grew louder, his immature muscles ached with pain as he carried his Captain. The grass that he walked on began to thin and was being increasingly replaced with rocks. Horror slapped Sanosuke hard in his face as his eyes laid apon the edge of the cliff, there was no where to go. Giving up hope, Sanosuke fell to the ground with his Captain still hanging on his back. The two laid silently on theit stomachs. Sanosuke tried to push himself off the ground but he no longer had the energy to support both himself and his Captain. After a feeble attempt to get back up on his feet, Sanosuke felt his face touch the cool gravel beneath him.
"..Sanosuke....leave me here....you've got to run Sanosuke" ordered Souzou, not wanting to see Sanosuke have his life end like this. "no, i'm not going to leave you Captain!" protested Sanosuke stubbornly. Souzou slowly got up from the ground and wrapped his arms around Sanosuke, lifting him up. Sanosuke looked up at Souzou, listening to every word he was saying and trying to predict what he was going to do next though even if he had an eternity he would've never seen it comming.
"Sanosuke...you've got to get out of here...." said Souzou.
The next thing Sanosuke knew was that he was being thrown over the edge of the clift. As he fell, Sanosuke turned back up towards the ledge to see Souzou facing in the direction of their persuers. A swarm of bullets struck at the warriors body, not giving him a chance to survive. Sanosuke's eyes narrowed at the sight of his Captain being mutilated.
"CAPTAIN SAAAGAAARRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" cried Sanosuke, feeling helpless as he fell into the river.
