Well, I did my civic duty and voted in the Virginia election today. Just the primaries, so nothing earth shattering yet. I was happy to see that a number of people going for Governor are strongly against raising taxes. I'm not surprised after the little thing Governor Warner was able to push through that almost 1 and a half billion dollar tax increase not long ago. Justified, of course, that the VA government was going to bring in far less money than expected for the year, and to keep the government running a huge tax increase was needed. So it got passed. 1 1/2 Billion on the state level is huge... in fact, the largest one in VA history. And then, as the year progressed, Governor Warner's office let out a big "Oops!" as they discovered that VA actually had the better part of a 1 1/2 Billion dollar SURPLUS (before the new tax hike was factored in). So VA took in the better part of 3 Billion dollars from its citizens *raises his hand* that it didn't need and didn't even have a use for.
Hurah. Of course, none of the money is going to be given back. Of course, the tax increase isn't being withdrawn. They assure us that they can figure out worthy causes for the money (obviously, since they know how to spend my money better than me). Anyway... Anyone wanna guess if taxes was a significant issue in my voting? :) Anyway, felt comfortable picking a Governor and Lt. Governor. The attorney generals were all way to similar for me to pick one. The guys were like clones, I swear. Anyway, Civic Duty fulfilled.
