First live show: Sesame Street On Ice or Jimmy Buffet. Pick & choose, music fans.
Last show you attended: Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band...yeah. For class. But it was solid - I mean "hip" or "jive."
A show you're looking forward to in the future: If you brought back a lot of dead/formerly great musicians and had them play in their heyday (i.e. Modest Mouse) I'd have a lot more - but I'll say GY!BE, Radiohead, Brian Eno, Phillip Glass (I know, he's generally a score composer), The Arcade Fire, Bob Dylan was good last time, The Strokes, Beck, Kissing Tigers, The Hives...
Best show you've ever seen: Tom Jones. Free at the Del Mar Fair.
A live act that disappointed you: Modest Mouse in 2005.
Most embarassing show you've attended: I'm with Kenny. I made the mistake of actually paying money to see that clownshoe fuck, Dashboard Confessional. That, or being talked into going to a Dave Matthews concert in San Diego with my ex-girlfriend and her fucking bad life decision friends. Good fucking Lord. "I admit that like someone else would admit to being raped by a clown." Thanks, Kenny. Took the words outta my mouth.
Bands/musicians you met that were jerkoffs: None but the lead singer of The Ataris. Too big for his britches, methinks. Usually, I try to separate the band and artist so I can't bitch and moan about what huge fucks they are (i.e. Robert Smith & The Cure) but all of those guys sucked.
Bands/musicians you met that ruled: All the guys in Kissing Tigers, Pink Handgrenade, Operatic - mostly because they're friends. The guys in Millencolin were pretty fucking awesome. And Swedish.
Bands/musicians you would like to meet: Beck, Bob Dylan (pre-religion days), David Bowie, The Strokes (for drinking), Converge, Mick Jagger, and the remaining two Beatles so I can punch them out
Bands you've traveled to see in other cities: A lot.
Favorite venue: Che Cafe, Bottom Of The Hill, Fillmore has an awesome venue, too.
Have you ever had a serious injury while attending a show?: Got kicked in the head - twice - at an Andrew W.K. show. But he sucker-punched Kyle in the face pretty good. So I'm gonna chalk that one up in the win column.
Band you've seen live that you can't wait to see again: Jimmy Buffet. That'd be the icing on the cake, my friends.
Band that you haven't seen yet that you can't wait to see: The Arcade Fire.
Band you'll never get to see live that you wish you had the chance: Elliott Smith, At The Drive-In, Refused, Violent Femmes (especially the free concerts that I've always just missed), and The Strokes/Tenacious D/Moldy Peaches show that I skipped five years ago.
Most expensive show you've ever attended: Yep, Warped Tour 2002. The reason I will never go back.
Strangest concert experience: Being at a Dave Matthews concert. An arena full of brain-dead hippies is an experience I will carry with me to the grave (in a very very bad way).
Do you enjoy going to shows alone?: Nope.
Favorite local band(s): Furious IV, No Knife/Hot Snakes, Pinback, The Album Leaf, The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower, The Locust, Operatic, oh...and Big Mountain. Nothing like early-90s reggae-pop.
Biggest surprise from an opening band you never heard before: Akimbo was a decent opener for Blood Brothers/Red Light Sting. An Albatross was pretty good, too.
Band you wish you had paid more attention to when you saw them because you ended up liking later on: None come to mind, but I'm sure there are a couple.
Band you've seen the most times: The Red Light Sting, Kissing Tigers, Cursive, Modest Mouse, Saves The Day, Pink Handgrenade/Operatic. I've also seen Hey Mercedes, Kind Of Like Spitting, Hot Rod Circuit, and The Appleseed Cast a million times because they always opened for the bands I wanted to see.
Bands you liked growing up: Well - from 4th grade until high school: Soul Asylum, Jimmy Buffet, Kris Kross (hell yes), Coolio (hell no), The Beatles, Raffi, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, blink 182, Millencolin, Green Day, The O.C. Supertones (biggest waste of money EVER) The Offspring...wow. If only I remembered half of what I used to listen to. This list would be WAY more incriminating.
When did you start getting into music?: 5th grade.
First band you really got into: I liked Raffi a bunch when I was 7 or 8. Other than that, I really liked blink 182 and Millencolin in 7th grade.
Band you have liked the longest: The Rolling Stones or Millencolin.
Band you are embarassed to admit you like: blink 182. That's not really embarassment, though. Say what you want - but I'll probably always like this band in some way or another. OH! Aaron and I have taken a strange liking for the All-American Rejects. That's embarassing.
Most embarassing genre phase you went through: Tie between pop-punk and emo. I was way more into pop-punk, though.
Band you used to like a lot that you don't like anymore: "Pretty much everything on Vagrant from 2000-2002." Thanks again, Kenny.
First album you ever bought with your own money: I went out to The Wherehouse and bought Coolio's "Fantastic Voyage" single and Soul Asylum's "Grave Dancer's Union" on the same day. It was a big day.
Are there any bands/albums your parents wouldn't let you listen to growing up?: My mom took me to Blockbuster Music or something like that and I was going to buy blink's "Cheshire Cat" and "Dude Ranch", but she wouldn't let me buy the Reel Big Fish album because it had a picture of a lady in bondage in the liner notes. Ironic, methinks.
Album(s) that rules all the way through: Elliot Smith, "Figure 8/Either-Or"; Wilco, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot/Summerteeth"; David Bowie, "Honky Dory"; The Velvet Underground & Nico, "S/T"; Modest Mouse, "Lonesome Crowded West/Moon & Antarctica"; Converge, "Jane Doe"; Refused, "The Shape Of Punk To Come"; Ornette Coleman, "The Shape Of Jazz To Come" (only when I'm in the mood, though); Van Morrison, "Astral Weeks"; Johnny Cash, "American IV"; Nick Drake, "Pink Moon"; The Pixies, "Doolittle"; Rolling Stones, "Sticky Fingers"; Ugly Casanova, "Sharpen Your Teeth"; Bob Dylan, "Blood On The Tracks". I also like all the albums from GY!BE, Explosions In The Sky, or Brian Eno from start to finish. Also include any best-of album from Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Nick Drake, Beatles, etc. I'm forgetting a bunch, but those are always solid.
Song you wish you knew all the words to: Every single Bob Dylan song...or those Radiohead songs that were recorded backwards.
Song people wouldn't expect you to like: The Beatles AND The Rolling Stones. And you were expecting to see "The Eagles"...pffft.
Most you've paid for a cd/record: $25 for a good copy of the Bob Dylan "Basement Tapes" vinyl.
Favorite record store: Lou's Records, Amoeba.
Best find:
Bands - The Red Light Sting, Akimbo, Missouri Loves Company, Necktie Party.
Records - original pressing - that still plays - of Rolling Stones "Some Girls" for $3.
An elusive or hard to find album that you can't seem to get your hands on: UK release of The Strokes "Is This It?" with the woman's gloved hand on the bare ass for under $30. I'm cheap. And, as Kenny said, "That’s what the internet’s for."
Sexy song: Ol' Dirty Bastard "Baby, I Like It Raw"
Favorite love song: See above.
Favorite breakup song: UB40 "Red Red Wine". Or all of "Jane Doe".
Lyric that describes you: "I like mine with lettuce & tomato/Hine's 57 & french-fry potato/big Kosher pickle & a cold draft beer/good God almighty, which way do I steer?/With my cheeseburger in paradise"
Last song you like to hear before you fall asleep: Mystical Son "Journey To Samadhi"
Album that reminds you of summer: Modest Mouse "Building Nothing Out Of Something"
Album that reminds you of winter: Wilco "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot", Elliott Smith "Either/Or"
Album that reminds you of spring: Van Morrison "Astral Weeks"
Album that reminds you of fall: Nick Drake "Five Leaves Left"
Song that reminds you of being in grade school: "X-Men: The Animated Series" theme-song at 10AM on Saturday mornings.
Song that reminds you of being in high school: Saves The Day "Through Being Cool" or "Stay What You Are"
Song that makes you (want to) cry: Fuck, I was just thinking about this the other night. Probably any Fallout Boy songs on the radio because they're so goddamned bad. Elliott Smith "Twilight" is pretty damned sad, but not cry-worthy.
Song that was "your song" with a significant other: Currently, Van Morrison "Sweet Thing." No way you're hearing the previous ones.
Band you wish you were in: The Funky Bunch.
Favorite cover song: Not a huge fan of 'em, but Dan Band "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" pisses Audra off pretty good.
Song you like to sing in the shower: Barry White "The First, The Last, My Everything" or Marvin Gaye "Let's Get It On." You can always hit the high notes in the shower - or so you think.
Song that reminds you of being little: Jimmy Buffet "Volcano"
Last song you heard today: Mirah "Words Cannot Describe"
Song you like a lot at the moment: Wilco "She A Jar"
Song you would make a homemade music video for: The Richmond Sluts "Sad City"...it would be dirty and gritty as shit because all I can think about when I listen to this song is how much Marlboro & Jack Daniels went into writing it.
Band you own the most albums by: Elliott Smith, Bob Dylan - 6 each.
Do you listen to the radio?: NPR. Fuck KZSC.
Favorite music video: The Bloodhound Gang "Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo" is a current favorite.
Have you ever had a song written about you?: Nope.
Have you ever had a song dedicated to you?: Nope.
Are you/have you ever been in any bands (real or fake)?: Yep.
Have you ever gone on tour?: No.
If yes, where?: No.
Favorite vocalist(s): Isaac Brock, Elliott Smith, Howlin' Pele Almquist/Mick Jagger
(THEY'RE THE SAME FUCKING PERSON DISPLACED THREE DECADES), John Reis [Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes], Jacob Bannon destroys shit with his voice, Frank Zappa, Robert Plant
Favorite drummer(s): Mario Rubalcaba & Ted Humphrey are pretty chull.
Favorite guitarist(s): Keith Richards, George Harrison, and Bob Dylan were the most influential for the bands I like these days so I'll say them.
Favorite bassist(s): John Paul Jones.
Favorite decade for music: I'm liking the 60s and 70s a lot more these days, but 90s-now are good, too.
Favorite dead musician: Elliott Smith.
Favorite misheard lyric: "Piss in the microwave." I don't even remember which band this is.
Favorite Beatle: The dead ones.
Best album cover:
Favorite soundtrack: Every Wes Anderson movie is good, but "Rushmore" is the best.
Favorite TV theme song: Batman. C'mon...
Best Wesley Willis song: "Alanis Morrisette"
