http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/fear-racism-prevent-easy-adoption-20091116-ihlg.html This article interested me, and I am kind of annoyed I didn't get to read some of the comments that people posted but from what
akathesia told I would've been annoyed.
Being adopted is still something that is looked at as being taboo and even more so when it is interracial. I was born in Sri Lanka and was adopted by the possibly the whitest people ever and I am still reasonably well adjusted.
Some of the comments made in regards to this article was that interracial adoption is unfair on the child...... I am pretty glad I was adopted; Sri Lanka still works somewhat to a caste system, girls for the most part aren't wanted. It might be better now but back in the early 80s during the start of a Civil War it wasn't good. Being adopted, being wanted, being loved, having a chance at a life is something that is never bad.
An adopted family is like any other; there are ups and there are downs but there is ALWAYS the unconditional love of people you know will ALWAYS have your back. No matter what you do (case in point my sister and her crazy crazy actions of late but thats another post). I don't see how this could be unfair.
We all know children are mean, and as children we were all teased about something. We could've been teased about our hair colour, the colour of our skin, the way we spoke so many things. You learn to adapt, you learn to deal with it and if you're lucky and have been raised to know who you are and to stand up for what you know is right and what you know of yourself you'll be fine. I don't feel like I have been held back or unfairly treated because I am adopted.
Everyone goes through a stage when they are teenagers, the always fun 'OMFG WHO AM I' stage. I went through it; why do I look the way I do, did i inherit the genes that will make me susceptible to some disease' but you get over it. I dont even think about it every day. It's just my life, I dont think its a situation that needs to be overthought.
I think the ignorance of the situation and people spouting overly politically correct and frankly coddling ideas about adoption anger me, Deborah Lee Furness had it right, adopting a child in Australia is too hard. Yes there needs to be a system to make sure that people are doing it for the right reasons, but it shouldnt be as intrusive as it is. Anyone can get pregnant and have a child there is no check on them but if you make the choice to adopt you have basically have your entire life investigated by people who really have no right to judge others.
Someone sent this poem to my mum when i was baby, she still doesn't know who sent it but she showed it to me when I was a teenager and I dont think anything can ring truer than this when talking from the point of view of being an adopted child.
Once there were two women, neither knew the other
One you do not remember, the other you call mother.
One gave you a nationality, the other gave you a name
One gave you the seed of talent, the other gave you an aim.
Two very different lives shaped yours into one
One became your guiding star, the other was your sun.
One gave you emotions, and one calmed your fears
One saw your first sweet smile, the other dried your tears.
The first gave you life, the second taught you to live it.
The first gave you a need for love, the second was there to give it.
One gave you up-it was all that she could do,
The other prayed for a child-God led her straight to you.
And now you ask me through your tears,
The age-old question of all the years,
Heredity or Environment, which are you a product of?
Neither darling, neither ... just two different kinds of Love.
i apologise for the rambling
ps. douchebag pls do not be douchey in the comments, go back to pretending you're a dolphin <3
