“We should get some rest. It’s getting late and we have a photo shoot tomorrow,” the leader of the group announced.
“Hai...” a chorus of response followed.
The members started to clean up the bowls of snacks and went to their perspective rooms to get some rest. One by one the lights of each room went off and the soft murmurs of ‘oyasumi’ was whispered to the other member that one shared with.
The last room, which Yamada and Chinen shared, was still lighted up. The light from the bed lamp was dimmed but bright enough to lit up the room. A small body curled up in one of the bed holding a picture of someone dear to him. A sigh escaped his lips as he turned to face the ceiling and let out another.
“Ryosuke…” he whispered.
Silence answered him back. He looked at the other’s bed and he closed his eyes again, letting out yet another sigh.
“I miss you, Ryosuke…” he whispered to no one in particular.
He looked at the picture he was holding onto. It was a picture of them together.
It was their anniversary. They spent the day together, walking around in the bustling city. It was just a normal date it seemed. However, Yamada surprised Chinen when he brought the latter to a private yacht that he rented just for them to spent dinner together.
The night was spent like a dream to Chinen. A candle-light dinner followed by soft music to dance too. Yamada even brought out a ring for Chinen.
“Although I may not be sure whether or not our future will be smooth sailing,” he took Chinen’s hand. “I just hope that throughout the rest of your life, we will always be together”
“Ryosuke…” Chinen was speechless.
“We might not be able to get married but I really hope to be with you for the rest of my life,” Yamada kneeled down. “So Chinen Yuri, will you be mine forever and be my happily ever after?”
“Ryosuke!” Chinen hugged Yamada. “Yes! Of course! I will be yours and you will be mine”
Yamada stood up and put the ring on Chinen’s finger to show the promise they’ve made that night. They shared a passionate and loving kiss for a moment and broke apart when they needed air.
“I love you, Yuri”
“I love you too, Ryosuke”
After that night, they spent would sleep together, cuddling with each other before falling asleep in either of the other’s bed. Chinen would usually wake up first between both of them. That day, as Chinen stirred from his sleep, he felt something was amiss.
He opened his eyes and saw that Yamada wasn’t beside him. Chinen went around the house looking for the other, opening the doors to each room slowly one by one looking for him but couldn’t find Yamada anywhere. He pouted and headed back to his room.
As he was about to call the other, he noticed a letter at the table beside his bed. He opened the letter and read the content slowly.
Dear Yuri,
By the time you see this letter I will be gone. I’m really sorry I didn’t say a proper goodbye. I will be back don’t worry about it. I will be back soon. I just need to do something for a while. When I’m done, I promise I will come back to you.
Love you always,

Chinen looked at the letter and frown deeply. He stayed silent for a moment and reread the contents before breaking out hysterically around the house screaming that Yamada was gone.
The rest of JUMP already knew about Yamada leaving. Before the latter left, he had bid the others and told them about the reason he will be leaving for a while. They did not tell Chinen about it thinking that maybe it was part of Yamada’s plan.
Chinen felt lonely for a couple of months waiting for Yamada’s return. Days became weeks and weeks turned to months. Chinen felt broken. Each night, he looks up into the sky at stared at the stars. He would wish that the next day Yamada would be back.
A year past since that day Yamada left him with just that letter. It still smelled like him when Chinen put it close to him. It makes him miss the other more.
“Ryosuke” he whispered to the picture. “When will you be home? I really miss you... I miss you, baka buta”
He looked at the ring on his finger again as he turn to his side and tried to sleep yet again that night.
“Ryosuke…” he whispered the name again as a lone tear fell.
Chinen was too sad to hear anything around him. He was sniffling hard to hear his bedroom door slowly opening as a figure made its way to the small boy.
A pair of arm wrapped around Chinen surprising the other. He was about to struggle free but the hug was tight and a familiar kiss was placed on his neck.
“Ryosuke?” he was still surprised.
“Tadaima, Yuri” Yamada whispered and hugged the other closer to him.
“Ryosuke…” Chinen was still unable to settle down his feelings.
“I miss you so much…” Yamada whispered into Chinen’s ear. “I miss everything about you”
Chinen managed to turn his body and face Yamada finally. He felt like he was dreaming again. He caressed Yamada’s cheeks lovingly before touching the others eyes, nose and finally his lips. Yamada held Chinen’s wrist before leaning towards the other placing a soft kiss on the other’s lips.
A tear slipped out of his eyes again as the broke apart. Chinen hugged Yamada tight and buried his face on the latter’s chest.
“You’re real. This is not a dream” he whispered. “I really miss you…”
“I’m sorry if I made you feel lonely” Yamada patted Chinen’s back. “I’m back and I promise to stay with you from now on”
Chinen looked up and looked into Yamada’s eyes. He was happy that the other was back. He pecked Yamada’s lips before burying himself into Yamada’s chest.
“We should go to sleep” Yamada whispered.
“You had just returned. I miss you a lot. I want to stay up looking at you” Chinen hugged Yamada tighter. “I don’t want to sleep because I’m scared if I wake up, you might…”
“Sshhh” Yamada caressed Chinen back. “I won’t. I promise I won’t leave this time”
“Demo…” Chinen tried to retort.
“I promise from now on, when you sleep, I will be right beside you” Yamada said softly. “When you wake up, I will still be beside you.”
“Hontou?”
“Uhm. Hontou” Yamada kissed Chinen’s forehead. “I promise I will be by your side forever from now on”
“Arigatou Ryosuke”
“Aishiteru, Yuri” Yamada kissed his cheeks. “Oyasumi”
“Watashi mo aishiteru” Chinen whispered softly. “Okaeri, Ryosuke”
Both of them smiled as they drifted off to sleep. They were wrapped tightly in each others embrace seemingly so that no one would be leave each other behind. However, both of them knew, they missed each other so much that just a hug was needed to show their love to each other while the couldn’t be able to see the other while sleeping.
In a way, their distance was a way to show that although in dreams they might not be together, in reality, they are always together.
