Summary: A best friend shares the good times and help you out by listening during the bad times. A best friend is someone who knows everything about you and still loves you.
Those simple gestures or even those simple words, they are always the cause of me smiling to myself like an idiot. Although we don’t talk to each other, we could easily read each other’s mind. A best friend is like a four leaf clover, hard to find and lucky to have.
Whenever I felt like I’ve not done enough and push myself to the edge of the cliff, I would always know that you’re there at the bottom of it to catch me when I fall. You’re always there to hold me up and direct me back to path I’m supposed to take.
Everyday I look through my phone at the conversations we had with each other. Though sometimes our conversations make no sense, we could still continue pointlessly and usually it just ends up in laughter.
“Meet me in five minutes. The usual ice-cream shop.” that was the message you sent.
My only thoughts were to see you and reach there in time. However, five minutes was obviously not enough.
“You’re late.” You sat there playing with your hair while waiting for me to settle down.
I pouted at your comment and sat down. There was the few seconds of silence before I rolled my eyes and held out my hand for the money to buy your ice-cream. With a smirk, you would take out the note and place it in my hand. I went to buy without asking you for your preferences knowing them already by heart.
After ordering, we settled comfortably in our seats and enjoyed the ice-cream.
“Ne, Yuto…” You called my name softly.
“Hmm?” I looked from my ice-cream.
“Nothing…” You looked at your ice-cream.
“What’s wrong Keito?” I looked at him. “Tell me.”
“Uhm… Maybe later?” he continued staring at his ice-cream cup.
“If you say so,” I shrugged.
There was only silence as we both finished up our ice-cream. It was normal for us like that. We don’t usually say much when we meet as we would only end up laughing at something I brought up randomly or you would just picked on me.
They were never a bother to me though. I love the way we would sometimes look at each and just smile without words being spoken because we know what the other is thinking.
As usual, we would end up at the nearby park after our dessert. I went to the swing first before you could. I wondered why you were still standing at the end of the playground when you would usually fight with me over the swing. You were texting someone. You looked at me when you’re done and I felt my phone vibrating.
“If you're alone, I'll be your shadow. If you want to cry, I'll be your shoulder. If you want a hug, I'll be your pillow. If you need to be happy, I'll be your smile. But anytime you need a friend, I'll just be me.”
I read it slowly and I couldn't help but smile to myself. “Baka.”
I typed out a reply before keeping my phone. I looked up from my phone and you were standing right in front of me.
“I love you.” you pulled me into a warm embrace. “I know I’ve said that I would never fall in love with my bestfriend but I couldn’t help but fall for you.”
I smiled closing my eyes and lay my head on your shoulder. I wrapped my arms around you hoping you will understand.
“You should read your messages, you know?” I giggled.
“Eh?” He took out his phone and looked at me.
He smiled and embraced me tighter after putting his phone back into his pocket. Again, silence engulfed us as we stayed in that position. There’s nothing else that matters anymore.
We were afraid to show that we love each other because if the relationship fails our friendship might be affected. However, we still stayed loving each other more as we stayed faithful to the friendship only two of us have.
“Arigatou, Keito. For everything you’ve done for me. The best relationship is when two people can act like lovers and best friends. It’s when you have more playful moments than serious moments. It’s when you can joke around, have unexpected hugs, random kisses. It’s when the two give each other that specific stare and just smile. It’s when one rather chill inside to watch movies, eats junk food, and cuddle than go out all the time. It’s when you stay up all night just to settle the arguments and problems. It’s when both can completely act yourself and they can still love you for who you are. The best relationship is having a best friend just like you. I love you.”
