Where is our compassion?

"Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive."
Dalai Lama

I fear the Dalai Lama is right.  The quote should not fear me and yet it does because I feel that humanity is losing it's sense of compassion.  Losing it's connection to nature around us and having no love for the life that is around us.

On facebook today my girlfriend posted that while at the park she watched a little girl stomp on a butterfly.  The little girl then asked her daddy to turn it back on and make it fly again.  People then commented about how funny and cute the story was.

FUNNY....CUTE....probably not to the butterfly.

How is it that this story did not inspire sadness?  Sadness for loss of life.  Sadness for a little girl who doesn't understand what she did.  Sadness that in our society non-human life is perceived to be here for our entertainment and discretion.

Our dependence is on the life around us.  Animals, fungus, bugs, bacteria, plants...keep us alive and yet our connection to things has become something to stomp on, something for our amusement instead of something to be appreciated.

How sad I am for humanity today.
