Traveling alone. There's something I never really thought about, until I was reading a travel journal that brought the point up. The writer was extolling the virtues of traveling alone after having gone on a trip with a friend. As I was thinking about it, the concept threw me off a bit. Now, if I somehow end up writing articles or guidebooks on ( Read more... )

I don't know how comfortable I would be traveling alone. I think a lot might depend on the distance. If I were in the tri-state area or something, I might be OK with it. But if I were to go to a foreign country by myself, I don't think I'd be comfortable at all...unless it was some sort of contained situation, like going on a cruise or going to stay at a resort or something. You'd be traveling "alone" but you would have other travelers around.

There are pros and cons to traveling alone. A huge pro would be that no one else can dictate your schedule but you. You can go where you want to go whenever you want without having to see what the other people you're traveling with want to do. I've had experiences where I've missed out on seeing things or going certain places because of having to accommodate to others. Another pro, as you mentioned, would be that you'd be more likely to interact with other people besides those you are traveling with...which could greatly expand your experience.

And there are a bunch of generally smaller cons, in my opinion. Traveling alone might be more expensive in the long run...as you're footing any travel fees, hotel expenses, etc all on your own. You also lose the comfort of knowing someone is with you...ie: I would much rather be lost in a place I'm unfamiliar with if someone else was there with me. And also it's sometimes just fun to have someone to share the experience with.
