Carlotta blows on her fingers to keep them warm as she heads inside with her bundle of mail. Of course, all the names have been changed to her code name, but she mentally fills in the correct ones as she reads them, as always.

Agent Frances,
The gentleman whom you requested information on is not connected with us. Another agent in your region has verified his identity to be Raul Mendez, with a degree in geology.

Dear Carlotta,
Missing you dreadfully. Can you get leave soon? They seem to be working you very hard in the balloon corps. We heard about the one that got loose the other day, wasn't that awful?!
Orion is well. I think he's missing you too. Sometimes he does his tricks out in the paddock, which is jolly funny.
Pam called the other day to ask for you, so I gave her your address. She says she's organised a club at St Clare's making bandages and things for the war effort, and that they've dug all the garden up for vegetables. I don't suppose she expected her reign as head girl to be in wartime.
Only a month or so to go until the baby comes. We're trying to think of a name. I like Terry for a boy and Julie for a girl. What do you think?
Take care,
Libby'

Dear Carlotta,
It's been simply ages since I talked to you; you said you'd write to me and you haven't, you mean pig!
Things are quite different at St Clare's now, with the war and all, but we're hanging in. The gymnastics club you started is competing in competitions this year, and won a regional trophy!
Libby said you'd gone off to help with the war, which is awfully brave of you. Take care out there.
Love,
Pam'
"Sara, there's someone at the door for you." one of the other residents of her rented accomodation calls up.
Carlotta jumps, shoves the letters under a loose floorboard, and goes down the stairs. She grimaces when she sees it's Eduardo; she'd been trying not to let him find out where she lived.
"Thanks. Hello Eduardo."
"Sara, will you come out to dinner with me?" Eduardo asks, holding out a flower.
"Thank you but I'm not sure that's a good idea." Carlotta says as gently as possible. "I'm sorry, but I don't want to lead you on, so to speak. I'd rather we stayed friends than got... romantically involved."
Eduardo sags slightly, and she almost feels sorry for him.
"Come down to the pub later and I'll get you a drink." she offers, in consolation.
"Why don't you fancy me?"
"I don't know. I'm sorry, I just don't." Carlotta says firmly.
