Characters: Draco Malfoy, Severus Snape and Lucius Malfoy Where: Spinner's End When: Monday night, late (January 28, 2002) Rating: Going to head for R already
Lucius turned quickly at the knocking, shooting a suspicious look at Severus. Wolves cannot knock, and there had been no mention of other humans in the house. His eyes narrowed even further as the plainly recognisable voice of Draco called through the door.
Since presumably Draco could not have walked into the house and past werewolves without detection, Lucius could only surmise that he'd been here the entire time.
"He's been here the whole fucking time?" Lucius said angrily, but quietly. He'd been sitting here wondering where Draco was, wondering if his son was safe, had intimated as much to Severus and he'd known where the boy was the whole time.
He stalked to the door, and pulled it open.
"Draco Malfoy," he said as evenly as possible. His voice had taken on a cold tone that went beyond fury.
It was past curfew and Draco was here, he was away from home on a night when there had been a threat on his life. The Ministry were going to punish him. Severus had lied to him. Lucius was filled with the manipulable form of anger that drove him to desire someone's death.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Lucius demanded of Severus, almost instantly snapping back to look at his son.
"--and you, what the hell are you doing here? Can you even begin to imagine..." Lucius curled his hand into a fist, pulling himself back from reaching for his wand.
Draco winced, making a move as if to take a half-step backwards. "I can imagine quite a bit," he mumbled, pulling up his robes to allow the anklet to glint.
"I was trying to think. He found me," he motioned to Severus. "I only got here tonight. It wasn't...exactly where I'd planned on being tonight." He admitted slowly.
His father's wrath was obvious, and while he knew things were going to get difficult, he couldn't just turn away. Showing that he was willing to face his father had to count for something?
"I am aware that thought for some is a dangerous thing to attempt, but your thinking leads to Ministry punishment?" he said incredulously. He looked down at the device, twinkling as though it were a trinket rather than an inflicted piece of control.
"Did it never occur to you to send an owl? You could have been dead for all we knew." Lucius realised Severus had been busy with the full moon, but there was no excuse for Draco. Besides, there had been plenty of opportunity for Severus to tell him that Draco was here.
"You cannot possibly imagine," he said a little louder.
He was annoyed. Once again everything was upside down. Once again he knew nothing of what was happening with his own son. He shook his head, then moved past Draco to leave the room. Lucius refused to be a part of this scene again. He had believed Draco to be in danger, and even then Severus had not shared the information. It was simply too far. And for his part, Draco had not come home, had allowed him to think the worst. He was careless, thoughtless, feckless...
"I...but..." he stammered a little more, before following his father in silence, staying several steps behind.
He didn't turn to look at Severus, didn't really look anywhere but his father's boot heels.
"Fa--I..." he sighed again, still unable to formulate words.
Formulate what? I'm sorry? I was wrong? He didn't know what he was going to say that could make things better.
"I didn't come here to find him," he finally offered quietly.
His father's anger was still palpable, and Draco couldn't blame him fully, but he was twenty-one now. He had been gone far longer during the war without such a reaction. He had been out later, he had done more dangerous, more foolish things, and this is what his father chose to be furious about?
"I should have been pleased to know that you were here," Lucius said pointedly. It was true, he would have been relieved to know that Draco was with Severus. It meant he was safe.
Now Draco was even less safe, the device would make him vulnerable to attack, unable to defend himself. Lucius couldn't understand how it could have happened, how Draco could have been so very foolish.
"But we are matched; I did not come here to find you. I came to speak with Severus, and I have."
Lucius did not look behind him to Draco. He wasn't expecting his son to follow him. He imagined there was much comfort to be found for Draco in a house full of those also tagged by the Ministry.
Presently, Draco was safe. But that didn't mean Lucius wanted deal with him.
