Aurin and Caleb Meet

Jul 10, 2007 22:19

Date: Tuesday, 10 July
Time: 1 PM
Place: Alecto's Animal Emporium, Aurin's Flat
Characters: Aurin Helm, Caleb Moore, Stella Sinistra
Status: Invitation Only, Incomplete

Aurin had chosen 1 PM as the time of the meeting for a reason; between 1 and 5, after lunch breaks were over and before business offices started closing, there were almost never any customers in the shop, and he could safely close the lower level when this Mr. Caleb Moore arrived.

For now, though, he kept the door open, trying to let in some of the breeze from outside to allay the heat, which even ice spells didn't seem to relieve for long. Romero stood on his usual perch in the window, a small gust charm set up beside it to keep him cool. The bird's eyes watched the street carefully. He knew there was company coming, since his master never cleaned the office otherwise, and this morning Aurin had not only cleared the books and papers off the surfaces of the desk and chairs, but had gone as far as actually organizing them (and shrinking what wouldn't fit on the shelves so that it could go in his desk drawers).

Aurin was planning this meeting in two stages: first, he'd greet the man on the lower level of the shop, where he could get first impressions and assess the animals' reactions (contrary to popular belief, all animals did not fear werewolves, and the ones at Alecto's had become used to June Connors' presence when her visits were more frequent). Then, depending on how that went, he'd invite Caleb and Stella up to the office for lunch and a more thorough talk about just why a man who'd been a werewolf when the Ministry regulations went into effect had managed to not only remain unregistered for so long, but had escaped Ministry notice in the first place.

Not that he relished having to take away the freedom that unregistered status no doubt provided the man; Aurin knew what it was like to have his every move watched, especially since he and his colleague Allocen had returned from America. He was running a huge risk inviting an Unregistered Werewolf into his place of residence, since if the Ministry found out he, Stella, and Caleb would all face charges of conspiracy and treason (the Ministry was fairly uncreative in its thinking on such matters). But his place of residence was basically the only place he had left to him with any privacy; even the first floor, though open to the public, was considered his private domain, and Carson hadn't yet gotten the MLEA bigwigs to the level of paranoia that would make them allow covert surveillance of a private residence. That was the main reason he'd decided to have the meeting at Alecto's, since they would've picked up a tail, so to speak, if they'd gone out in public together.

It was nearly 1. Aurin finished rubbing Gus, the black boa constrictor, with oil for his dry skin, wiped the excess off his hands, and headed to the front of the store to wait for his guests.
