Charlotte was working on putting the stock away. She’d sent Susan on an errand to get some supplies, but expected her back anytime. Socrates was curled up at the end of the register counter as usual. She found herself getting more and more tired lately. The prospect of several naps during the day was becoming more and more of a pleasurable fantasy. She yawned as she placed a book on the shelf and looked around her shop. Things had calmed down, but she expected that it would pick back up around the beginning of the school year. She had decided to stock several of the choices of the schools for materials later in the summer.

Charlotte was wearing a loose fitting dress made of a jersey type material. It was cooler and stretchy. It was good for hiding her tummy. She was a little self-conscious and self-deprecating when it came to her figure. Even though she wasn’t really showing, she was showing to herself. She could see the tiniest little imperfection in the mirror, on top of the circles under her eyes. She wasn’t sleeping so well lately. She faked it for Seamus’ sake, but she lay in bed most of the night just staring at the ceiling. Maybe that was why she needed a nap or twelve.

There was just a brief moment when she had thought about closing up the bookshop. It was a dream yes, but her dream for a family was bigger and better. Seamus needed help with the bar. She worried that he would work too hard and he worried that she would do the same, especially with the baby coming. She sighed softly and moved to sit down in one of the soft chairs in the sitting area. Socrates came over and plopped his head in her lap.
