Beven smoothed out her skirt as she stood waiting in the back kitchen of Finnigan’s in Kenmare, waiting for her only son Seamus and his bride-to-be, Charlotte Aurelius to come through the Floo Network to visit. She had invited Charlotte to come alone, but she knew from the way her son responded that he would be coming with her. She could tell every nuance of his “Aye, Mum,” even through those infernal Journals. Then it struck her…she could write directly to Charlotte in her Journal without Seamus knowing. Well, she could do it once anyway.
Cian was putting the water on in the family kitchen proper and would join her in a minute to welcome their son and Charlotte. Cian’s relationship was much easier with the lass than hers, but that was to be expected, wasn’t it? Something in the back of her mind said, “No, Beven,” but she ignored it. The green flash of the Floo heralded their coming and Beven called out to Cian to join her. The older boys were watching the pub and the Guest House this afternoon, although she had no doubt that Cian would hie Seamus away to the pub ‘fore long, leaving her with the private time she sought to get to know Charlotte a little better. It wasn’t what she wanted, but it would have to do.
“Aye, luvs. Cheers, then. Cead Mile Failte. Seamus, Charlotte, we’re so glad you’ve come to visit.” She waited until they had brushed off the soot, then gathered each of them in turn into a warm hug. Sure enough, Cian gave Seamus a look and he followed his father without comment, but not before throwing an arm around Charlotte and saying, “’Twill be in the pub room, Sweetheart. Right, give me a call if you’ve a need.”
He didn’t need to state the obvious end to that sentence. “If you’ve a need of saving from my witch of a Mum.” Beven was undaunted, although she gave her impudent son a scowl and a raised eyebrow in parting. She wanted to get to know Charlotte better for her own reasons, no matter what her own flesh and blood warlock thought of it.
“Come Char, love, let’s have us some tea, shall we?” She led the way into the kitchen.
