Worried and Checking Up

It had been several months since Remus had visited the quiet little cottage near Ottery St. Catchpole. Then it had been a celebration. His best friend had turned thirty and the three of them had shared a lovely meal. Despite the impending indignities of their upcoming trip to be collared like the animals the Ministry would paint them as, the mood had been hopeful.
He had not had much chance to visit with his friends since. But, he had managed the odd conversation with Fleur at meals or in the halls at school. And he and Bill exchanged words occasionally.
Tonight, he walked quickly up the path without the same spring in his step as months ago.
He hadn't seen Fleur at the castle in a few days. It was rare for her to go quite so long without coming to assist Filius with his classes. Concerned, Remus had approached the aging Professor that afternoon only to learn his friend's wife had resigned her post as his assistant. The last classes of the day seemed to drag on as Remus waited with impatience for a time he could check up on his friends.
He'd left the school immediately after ending his last lesson for the day. The cottage was mostly dark when he arrived, odd considering Fleur would normally have had the lamps lit for Bill's arrival after work. Getting anxious, now, Remus rapped loudly upon the door, senses alert for any other sign of trouble.
