"What are you on about?" Remus paused in his own work to stare at Severus. "'Really quite nervous'? I don't have the faintest idea why she'd be nervous. It's dinner and a butterbeer at The Leaky Cauldron."

A knot of guilt and worry began to form in the pit of Remus' stomach. Had 'Dora actually said that to Severus? Of course it had been easier for Remus. He was the one who had been less emotionally invested in the relationship to begin with. But, surely she wasn't still waiting for him to...No, it had been months since they talked. He'd have heard from her before now if that was true.

"Severus, please. None of this is designed to hurt you. I wouldn't do that. I couldn't. Three years' history was mostly spent with me in the packs and her in the field. There's a good chance I saw you more often than I did 'Dora. I promise you if there is anything more to this dinner than two friends catching up after not speaking for more than six months, it's in her head and her head alone."

Realizing they were surrounded by staff and elves, Remus clamped his mouth shut on any further explanations.

"Look, this is not the place for this discussion. I've barely seen you since plans were made. I would have told you once we had a chance for a real conversation. If you'd like to make that time for that real conversation now, let's take this somewhere more private, hm?"

Of course, talking about it like rational adults would have been the logical thing to do. One might even think that Severus, who prided himself on not allowing emotions to cloud his decisions, would know that.

Remus' suggestion was a perfectly reasonable one.

Unfortunately, maturity, logic, and even basic rationality seemed to evade Severus when the issue was one to which he was profoundly emotionally attached. This was made all the worse by his continued stubborn self-denial that he was profoundly emotionally attached, to begin with.

Drawing his dignity about him like a cloak, he shook his head.

"Entirely unnecessary. You owe me no explanations - you are free to do as you wish.

"I'll see you tomorrow for the wolfsbane potion. I've got marking to do. Goodnight."

He then turnt on his heel and made for the nearest exit so he could go and sulk, alone.
