Happy Holidays and All That Jazz (Spinner's End Holiday Dinner)

The house smelled of spices and pine and baking and all the warm homey scents Zak remembered from his parents' house. That he'd made it so, for the most part didn't phase him in the least. Indeed, he was quite pleased with himself. He'd decorated (with some help from June); he'd cooked; he'd shopped -- he'd gotten a promotion!
He'd spent that afternoon in the kitchen. There was no true dining room in the house, so he'd lengthened the table in the kitchen to accomodate the seven extra people. The table was festooned with candles and evergreen cuts, little ceramic 'presents' he'd found for cheap at a little stall just outside Flourish & Blotts.
He'd used the counter as a sort of makeshift sideboard. At the moment it was loaded with mince pies, steamed vegetables, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, bread pudding, fresh bread, Christmas pudding, several types of biscuits, and the crowning glory of his menu -- the Christmas goose in a cranberry orange glaze.
Drinks were set-up in the sitting room so early arrivals would be able to 'mingle' as though this were a fancy party, even though it really wasn't.
It was going to be friends geting together to eat and talk and laugh and be merry.
How could they go wrong?
Wandering out into the sitting room, Zak placed a a couple plates of biscuits on a table for pre-dinner consumption. The faerie lights were sparkling in the tree; there was a light snow falling outside the window behind it. In short, it was "beginning to look a lot like Christmas".
