Wearing his full formal Auror robes, Aurin walked into the MLEA main offices with brisk purpose. He marched up to the front desk and growled at the young witch who'd been unfortunate enough to be assigned the morning shift, "Aurin Helm. Get me in to see Carson, now."
The girl drew back, alarmed, but managed to keep her voice steady as she replied, for which Aurin gave her a bit of respect, "Of course. If you could just tell me the reason for your visit?"
"I'm here to ask for a re-posting of my team."
"Er...I'm sorry sir, but wouldn't that sort of matter be best taken care of in the form of a request to scheduling?"
"Normally, yes, but this is a short-notice change and he's my direct superior, which means he's in charge of approving my schedule. So take me to him."
"Yes, of course," she said, beckoning over another low-level employee. "Please escort Mr. Helm to Mr. Carson's office."
Aurin followed the gofer back through the corridors of the building to where the upper-level offices were located. The young man disappeared as soon as he'd pointed out Carson's office, and Aurin knocked on the door.
"Come in," came Carson's voice, muffled by the thick door. Aurin stepped into the office, shutting the door none-too-gently behind him.
Carson was head of the interrogations department, and Aurin knew the man had been involved in the questionings the night of the attack on the Leaky, which made him despicable as far as he was concerned. Still, he was the direct superior to Aurin's team, and that meant Aurin had to walk a fine line in dealing with the situation. "I want a posting change for my team for this Wednesday," he said, getting straight to the point.
Carson, who hadn't looked up from his desk when Aurin entered the room, now did so. He raised one condescending eyebrow, "And what's wrong with your current posting?" He asked.
"It's a babysitting job, just like all the other assignments you've given my team thus far have been. You're handling me, sir, and I don't like being handled."
Carson sneered and asked sarcastically, "Well then, what do you propose for Wednesday?"
"I want my team to be the one covering Lucius Malfoy's book-signing event."
For a moment Carson just stared at him. Then he laughed unpleasantly, "Well, I'd gladly give you the post, lad, but I'm afraid it's already covered!"
"Yes, I know," Aurin replied, voice cold, "Covered by three green recruits with not two years' experience between them! I doubt if they were even in the field during the war!" He advanced on Carson, who looked less sure of himself as Aurin neared his desk, until finally Aurin was looking down at his superior, who had pressed himself as far back in his chair as possible. "What if there's an attack on the book-signing, either by Death Eaters or by the vandals who tore up the shop? The team you've got posted now couldn't subdue a niffler if they had to!" He rolled up his sleeves, exposing the scar along his forearm, "My team, or at least three members of it, is experienced in combat. If you really want the public to think the Ministry's keeping them safe, then you'll change the postings!"
Carson spluttered indignantly for a minute, then stammered, "Yes, yes of c-course, I'll change the postings r-right away, you'll be expected at the bookstore th-the morning of the event..."
Aurin stood straight again. "Thank you for your time, sir," he said, turning on his heel and marching out of the office before Carson could do or say anything more.
As he made his way out of the building, Aurin felt a little weak in the knees. He'd been balancing on a knife edge by overpowering his boss in a battle of wills, contemptible coward though the man may have been. He didn't want to be seen as too much of a "wild card," but he didn't want Carson to think he'd sit, lie down, and roll over at the Ministry's command, either. As soon as he could, Aurin apparated home, not wanting to deal with the attention his uniform would get in the streets.
Aurin was a Ministry employee, but he was nobody's dog.
