Harry closed his journal and went straight to his desk, not giving himself time to change his mind. He wrote out the note, sealed it in an envelope and gave it to Hedwig to deliver. She eyed him with one golden eye to which he answered with a light chuckle, a treat, and a scratch behind her wing.
"Just one trip this time, Hedwig. I promise." She nipped his finger to make sure he knew she would hold him to that before taking the treat from him...and, reluctantly, the envelope.
Harry watched her from the balcony as she disappeared into the horizon, chewing the nail of his thumb and feeling like he'd just done something - huge. Huge and frightening.
But good.
