T-Shirts that say "Girls like it better here" or "This place is for lovers" or even simply the name of the state--are toted on teenage girls around America...except for the girls who actually live there. The side bangs and flats are worn with pride as people everywhere are getting in the state of mind this state brings. Why is the world obsessed with California? Is it the heat? Is it the tall buildings? For me, it's the sandy skies, the painted ocean, the spring in your step that you get when you're there, and the untouchability of it all. I speak for everyone when I say that California is a paradise. It's a paradise for friends, enemies, lovers, haters, posers, preps, elders, children, famous, and the homeless. Everyone has a dream that can come true in California. Everything, even the smog, is beautiful. You're wrapped up in a fantasy and every minute is pure rapture. You can truly have a "spot." You can go someplace and chill for hours upon hours and no one will tell you to leave. Your friends look like rock stars, regardless of what they're wearing or where they come from. On the drive home today, I felt the bass of "Ocean Avenue" pounding against my back because I had it turned up so loud. Everyone knows that song has a special meaning to Stewart and me, but regardless-that is a killer song. The song that followed was equally as awesome and I fear I may be one of the only people who know it as "California" by Phantom Planet instead of "The OC Theme Song." It was a song long before it was a theme. California has fostered so many memories of mine and I hold them so tightly for fear that someone will try to take them away from me. Does anyone know exactly how I feel? How can they, if I can't accurately express it myself? All we know is that California is magical. No one can deny its embraces and I'll be damned if I want to. Am I the only one who feels an almost frightening attraction to this state? Is it really a state...or a state of mind?
