I need help with my reading list. I go to Bookmans and I kinda flail around like a gimp. I still haven't quite adjusted to not having Dave as my personal shopper when I go the bookstore. It's been a year now, time to learn to deal with this myself (although I am actually going to email him the book list to ask him to add to it if he wants ( Read more... )

Terry Goodkind, Sword of Truth series - First book is "Wizard's First Rule"
It is one of my favorite fantasy books for the midevil/magic setting.

I can suggest more in a bit if you want more of this type.

I totally agree the first few books in this series are awesome. Over time they started getting a little... angsty and sadistic for me, like a torture sequence that goes on for like hundreds of pages. I may be exaggerating based on my memories, but after reading it I just felt like I needed a shower, ick. It was powerful writing though, no doubt. Wizard's First Rule is awesome.

I also highly recommend the Piers Anthony Xanth series as well as his Mode books.

Your right, the latter books have no where near the feeling of th first books.

I also immensely enjoyed the Wheel of Time series beginning books.

actually i agree mostly with the sword of truth series. very moving. i like hte later books they get more political but a little formulaic. however, its like 10 books so far and its still not done AND each book is 500+ pages. so its a lot of reading. but worthwhile

Sweet! Now I know two people who don't like the Wheel of Time series (me being the other).

FWIW, I don’t care for Robert Jordan’s work, but I did really enjoy the first two books in the Terry Goodkind Sword of Truth series. And they kind of stand alone, so you can just stop after the second. =)

Goodkind gets compared to Jordan a lot, but best I can tell the similarities are “have both written craploads about fantasy worlds.”
