I think most cogent comment I tend to try and make is that trust is not something that you earn, it is a gift. There is nothing that you can do to "earn" trust, the best you can do is prove that you are worthy of trust that has already been given....
As a correlation, when you have failed in proving yourself worthy of trust that has been given to you, you have essentially spurned a gift that is often very dearly given and highly valued. People are loathe to offer a similar gift again.
