And it really took me a while to realize just how much of it had to do with class, too. Because I wasn't the poor one... I didn't really realize until I first read that post of Q|D's that, for example, my parents looking at me funny when I started to dress like my townie friends was as much about class as about picking up on counterculture markers.
(For example, one of the common ways in gay leather -- which our community was very tied to in a lot of ways -- to signal your preference is to wear your keys hanging from the left (top) or right (bottom) side of your belt. I took to doing this, figuring that people outside of the BDSM community would just think... I had keys. It was very handy to have them so ready to hand, too.
I constantly heard from my family that I looked "like a janitor" because "who hangs their keys like that?" At the time, I thought it was just too butch for my folks, but I suspect there was also something else to "looking like a janitor/workman.")
